is ther a way to tell.. or just by looking at it and knowing your stuff the only way??

About the only way is to arm yourself with as much information as possible. The T-18 is a BIG tramsmission and it is heavy... It's shape is pretty unique also.

Most of the time IDing a trans is pretty straight forward as long as you are familiar with them... That is where experience and having a good guide helps.

You can use this page for a quick visual guide -->> http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f2/transmission-transfer-case-variants-types-cjs-53-86-a-134/

And for real in depth information - I like Novak... Here is their page on the T-18 -->> The Borg-Warner T18 & T19 Transmissions - Novak Conversions

The trans on Craigslist is an SR4
The T-18 will say right on it either T-18 -1 or T-18 -B Drivers side [I believe]
If buying one make sure it has the 6.32 1st gear and not the 4.02 1st
The letter code will not tell you whats inside

AdBlock Detected

I get it, I'm a Jeep owner and ad-block detectors kinda stink but ads are needed on this site. This is a CJ site, all the ads are set for autos (some times others get through.) I cannot make them just for Jeeps but I try.

Please allow ads as they help keep this site running by offsetting the costs of software and server fees.
