I Have a '76 CJ5 with Chevy 350 and T-150 tranny. For a while it has been slipping out of 2nd and 3rd gear when coasting but recently it has developed a loud squealing and grinding noise when you shift into reverse, second or third. I also get the same noise if the clutch is let out when in neutral.

I was initially thinking syncro's except that it will engage 2nd, 3rd and reverse and will take a load but the noise is horrifying.

BTW first gear works fine.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, you could drive the jeep until 1st gear is destroyed too. No matter how you look at it your Transmission is SERIOUSLY sick, possibly terminally ill. The good news is that T-150 aren't all that difficult to find. The bad news is, the T-150 isn't all that strong, i.e. your SBC can rather easily destroy a T-150 . I say look at Novak and think seriously about adapting in a Ford T-18 . That puny little 350 won't destroy a T-18 . Also, you can find used T-18 's by the boat load.

I have to disagree about the strength of a T-150 . In my opinion the T-150 is about the same strength as a T-18 just without the granny low. Jeep put the T-150 behind a V8. The biggest issue I have seen with the T-150 is that it is very important to make sure that when bolting the top down to the case each bolt is individually gooped with sealant prior to install or the Transmission oil will leak out through the bolt holes when driving. It takes a while but the case eventually will go dry.

The holding gears are worn. The synco's have nut'n to do with it jump'n out of gear.
Time to rebuild before it's destroyed from wear.

Big fan of the T-150 . Plenty strong enough for a 350 and in my opinion the best option for running in mud. I do think that finding a replacement with lower mileage would be more cost effective than doing a rebuild. The T-150 is not an endangered species such as the jeep T-18 . I would agree with LG on worn gears and replacing those with new brings rebuild price up way past the cost of a good replacement for the whole thing used.

I always thought the T-150 was a strong Transmission , but after hearing a jeep guy speak unhappy things about it I changed my mind. Maybe inappropriately so. No matter what this Transmission is well on it's way to very serious trouble, along with needing serious money. I'd still look for a Ford T-18 along with an adaptor kit fon Advance adaptors or Novak.

mine does the same thing, the last jeep I owned did the same thing when I purchased it. The rebuild looks straight fwd. The thing I'm not sure about mine is the shutter it makes unless I drop the clutch. Let us know how it goes if you decide to rebuild.. I'm leaning towards rebuilding mine this winter..

adkcj5, it might help to give a little gas when putting into gear, if you have to drive it. Thats what I do when coasting, if I let off the gas at all it will pop out... terrible I know but I just got it back on the road....

There are a lot of reasons other than what’s inside the box that can cause a Transmission to pop out of gear. Among them are bad motor mounts, bad Transmission mount, bad or no torque stud/limiter, a miss aligned clutch, and although inside the box improper endplay at the main shaft.
