Hello fellas I got a question about a tranny swap. I got a 78 CJ5 with AMC 304 and a T-150 /Dana 20 combo, I'm going to put in a T-176 /Dana 300 im trying to find out for sure what I need to do about the clutch and pilot bearing. I know the input shaft is the same length, but the splines and the tip of the input shaft are a different size. That said what clutch and pilot bearing would I need to buy for it? Maybe a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l clutch and pilot bearing? Are the holes in the crank the same size and is the flywheel bolts the same? Thanks for the help in advance

Looking at an old Advance Adapters catalog, I see the '76-'79 T-150 has an 1 1/8" dia.x10 spline pilot shaft which is the same as the '80-'86 T-176 . The T-150 input shaft is a .673 dia., while the T-176 is a .590. So the bushing will have to be changed here. The mounting holes in the trannys are both the same also. The shaft length on the T-150 is an 1/8" longer and the pilot bearing input is a 1/2" longer. Advance Adapters state that the input bearing length will have to be shortened.

I was looking on Novak in the knowledge section it says the input shafts are the same length 7.5 inches but the splines are a different size along with pilot tip. I was wondering if any one has done this swap what parts have they used and for what year? If the pilot bearing hole is the same size in both cranks I was thinking I could just get a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l pilot bearing from an 83 which is what the tranny is coming out of and use it with the 78 AMC 304 . And maybe use a clutch from a 83 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l as well

Yes, you are right about the clutch but to be more specific, the clutch pressure plate must match the engine and it's flywheel. The friction plate must match the splines on the Transmission input shaft. What is really important is the diameter of the pressure plate must match the friction plate. In some cases these 2 clutch parts may not match any vehicle. When I installed a Ford T-18 into a CJ7 I called up CenterForce to make sure I would get clutch parts that would work. If you plan or reusing an old clutch or if you want to go with a lesser brand the tech support may not be as helpful. It really isn't so hard. Just remember the splines must match the tranny and the pressure plate must match the flywheel.
The pilot bushing OD must match the flywheel and the ID must match the tranny input shaft.

Well both clutches are the same diameter I believe I suppose I could use the clutch disk from the T-176 and the pressure plate from the AMC 304 ? I was looking on Novak the T-150 pilot tip is 17mm, the T-176 is 19/32 from what I could tell from a unit converter is the difference is very miniscule but I don't know if even it being that minor of a difference would it cause a problem. Oh and there is a 1/16 of an inch difference in the input shaft size with the spline count being the same, the T-176 being the bigger of the two at 1-1/8" 10 spline.
