After reading some posts, discovered that my Transmission popping out of third gear on deceleration is pretty common, but really annoying. What is the best fix for this? Rebuild necessary? Never done one but can usually figure stuff out if I have too. Thanks

I dont know a lot about trannys, Should I just rebuild it or take it somewhere that works on trannys to figure out what it needs?

Mine pops out of first all the time and the gear selection is like a bowl of porridge. Expensive fix or simple?

I have the same problem and have been told someone who has some mechanical ability can rebuild it with a rebuild kit

Thats good to know. I should be able to get a local guy to sort it out for me relatively easy if its a standard rebuild kit. I am off to browse rebuild gearbox kits!

I tried to do one and ended up taking to a tranny guy they are a bitch if have never done one.

I recently rebuilt mine, never done one before either. Its not that difficult, if you are mechanically inclined I suggest you try it. My helpful hints to you are to get yourself the best set of snap ring pliers you can possibly afford, a nice big table, a good bearing puller, some way to clean parts, and a good diagram. Most importantly lay everything out exactly as it came apart and remember where each shim came from and put them back. Also get you some vaseline for bearing reassembly don't use grease. They make a special assembly goop stuff, but the vaseline will work. You can find good instructions and diagrams in the docs section above, also if you buy a kit from novak I hear that they include a great set of instructions. Don't be skeered give it a shot.

Ok thanks for the input. You've given me confidence to do this. The only problem I have is when they say "shade tree mechanic" thats exactly what I would be since my garage is currently a daycare facility. I hate having to crawl around in the dirt to work on anything, but thanks for the post.

I did the one in My J-10. Not rocket surgery but takes some concentration and attention to detail. I had it "rebuilt " by a pro and spent a lot of money for Limited results. build a cradle to set it in so you don't have to wrestle with it on the table. The rear bearing was a bit of a challenge to get out, had to build a puller.

I believe the dropping out of gear problem is related to the main shaft pre load.

I say "have at it", can't do much worse than a pro. and the difference in the price is respectable.

I've learned if you take lots of picture when you take something apart it help when time comes to put it back together.
