Throttle Cable

I am having a bit of a problem with my throttle cable, when I back off to shift or slow down it takes several seconds before the throttle backs off.

Is there a way to lube these? It is hooked to a Weber on my mighty Iron Duke

Is your linkage moving freely? Are your throttle return springs binding up, or are they sticking on something, are they just old and need replaced?

I ask because I've never heard of lubricating a throttle cable. It's just a small braided steel cable inside a plastic sleeve. I don't think adding lubricant inside of there will help anything, my opinion...

You could also check both ends of your throttle cable to make sure the cable itself isn't frayed and catching inside of its sleeve, also you could check your accelerator pedal, make sure it's not catching on anything.

The linkage feels like it is free, I didnt see any springs on the carb end but I was on my way out the door to a meeting, I will look more in the morning.

on motorcycles we lube throttle cables once a year so I did not know if folks do that on these too?

I know the carb end of the cable fitting looks good not sure about inside but I will look

while in my meeting I did finally find a new cable for $18

Most carbs have return springs on them for safety at least

I did find a spring late last night on the back side of the carb, it looks like it pulls the butterfly shut.

as soon as i get some more light I am going to unhook the linkage and try to see if it is the cable dragging or the carb.

FWIW: I use Silicon spray on cable set-ups like that.
Dirt doesn't stick to it...

Ok I unhooked the cable and it slides very free so that is not the problem.

But with the cable off i did the throttle by hand and it does hang open. here is a picture of the spring, its all rusty so I guess I need to find another one but where, its a Webber carb would they have the springs?

You could add a throttle return spring. They can be purchased at an auto parts or hardware store.

Can anyone tell me what model of Weber this is and from the pictures can you tell if I am missing any springs? I think it might be a Weber 32/36 DFEV/AV?

There should be a data plate on the side of the card with the serial number/ model number on it. I have a Weber 32/36 DGEV and that is where it's at on mine. This site has a page with tips on how to help you ID your carb.

OK, I found the model and it is a 32/36 DGEV,

Now to find a picture of all the linkage of one on a 4 cyl to see if it is missing anything

There should be a loop for a throttle return spring somewhere on the carb. It could be a dangerous situation if your caught in heavy traffic and throttle hangs. Inspect your linkage to see possibly a hole for a spring to fit in. Any automotive store should have a spring that will work. If your spring has too little tension it will come off. Too much tension will make the throttle hard to press.

There are some places on the linkage but it looks like I will have to make something for the other end of a spring.

Hanging up in heavy traffic it what got my attention. Like tonight it took me 24 minutes to go 5 miles but i was in my truck

Ironically enough, shortly after I saw this thread my wife was driving my Jeep and the throttle started sticking when she released the gas pedal such that the engine kept rapping out until she tapped the gas pedal again. Since I have nothing but time right now I looked under the hood and the PO had stretched the original throttle return spring and attached it to the brake power booster with a zip-tie. I took the old spring off and put a new one on I had in my box o' parts and connected it so that it was a straight pull and voila, problem fixed.

it is a bit of a surprise when it happens, the first couple of times I drove it there was more of just a hesitation but it is getting worse. I may get to work on it tomorrow as my gauges will be here late today, I got my new radio yesterday
