Its a very rough old machine and is scary to drive but it gets better each time I work on it.
Hi all- tonight I installed the flywheel and clutch assembly on the CJ. I'm also installing all new clutch linkage and a throw out bearing fork. I looked at the bell housing tonight and noticed the new pivot ball stand is shorter than the old one. I'm sure I can make something work out but was wondering if maybe there was a first and second design? See pics.

Any thoughts out there? Thanks.

There were several diferent versions of this. Some with the ball built on the end of the stud and some with the ball seperate like yours. A friend of mine had one wear out and we had a hell of a time getting the right one.. You might get that to work.

Try to shim it out with washers to about the same distance. You want that ball in the same place so the fork works properly.

I cleaned and painted the Transmission tonight and really looked at the old ball socket...its worn but theres still plenty of metal left to keep the ball in place. I may just reuse it. If not I will weld A longer bolt to the new one and space it out like you guys suggested.

thanks.

You have a plan, the one you've got in the bell housing looks good to me. Clean it out, dob some grease in the ball cup, put a clean ball in and keep moving.

I finished up the clutch job today, well all except for installing the new throw out fork linkage. I ran out of fine thread nuts and I needed them to jamb nut the adjuster collar. I ended up cleaning the old ball stud and used it over. Seems fine. I think every now and then I'll pull the throw out fork grommet and try to put a little dab of grease on the end of a screw driver and lube the ball. Probably will never have a problem the way I drive.

I've been working on a major Hot Rod project for the last 6 years so to walk away and work on something simple is actually fun. I was also surprised to see how well a 75 CJ5 is made. Much better than the mid 70's cars of the day and not one soft piece a :dung: metric bolt to be found. I was able to reuse most every bolt but the cross member bolts.

Oh and I don't really understand the Transmission mount stabilize stud and bushings... guess it works though. lol
