I recently put a 4" lift kit on my 1979 CJ7 . I haven't driven it much at all. I was just ready to put 1 piece axle in the AMC20 rear and noticed the pinion angle is pointed up too high. It would be perfect if I was going to run a CV shaft. I have no shim in the rear springs at all. It was perfect with the stock springs. I am not sure what the problem is.

Can I correct this by shimming the axle down or are the rear springs possibily put on backwards>? Any help or suggestions would be great.

Do you already have shims mounted on the springs?
Most manufacturers of a 4 inch lift would already have them mounted when they ship the springs.

A lot of aftermarket lift springs are painted "front" or "back".....there IS a difference in distance from each spring eye to the centering pin. And getting them reversed can cause the position of the axle to be wrong.

The leaf springs are marked/painted, so I went by those markings. I will look at it this weekend and double check everything.

This is a new one on me. As dave said most 4" springs come with shims to shim the pinion up some. I've never heard of a lift that pointed the pinion up without a shim.
What make of springs do you have ? what size shackles are on it ?
A few pics might help us some.

Post pics so we can what the issue is.

My rear driveshaft had splines showing until I drove it and it seemed to settle. Now there are hardly any splines showing. Maybe it just needs to settle?

Are you looking at it with weight on it? if its still on the stands drop it to the floor and recheck it.
