hey everyone.
i am having a little trouble with my 1975 jeep CJ5 Transmission .
when i am in 2nd gear it pops out sometimes.
i have no leaks and hopefully someone can help me with this.

i also have another problem.
the man i bought the jeep from had gotten the front differential done but towed it back to his home with no oil in it.
that means the gears are chewed and burned up...
i have been looking for an axle but im not sure on which kind my jeep takes...
thanks in advance!

If it's not a QuadraTrac setup or he towed it home with the hub locked in, it shouldn't have damaged the ring & pinion too much.;)

thanks for the reply Long Horn.

i decided to take the entire the apart and i discovered that the ring and pinion are shot...

i guess i might have to buy a new diff im not sure what the gears are for it though...

Stock would be a Dana 30 , not that anything is ever completely stock.

If your not real tight on cash, it would be a excellent time for a traction adding differential of one type or another.

yeah...
i just found out that it is a Dana 30 .
i really wouldnt want to upgrade to a bigger axle.

but do you have any idea why my tranny pops out of 2nd sometimes thanks.

Sounds to me like a few to many miles.
Time for a rebuild.;)
Do you have any idea what Transmission is in your rig?

yes sir my Transmission is a T-15 if im not mistaken,
just think of it as a 5 speed but i will tell you how my gears are like.
just where 1st would be its Granny.
where 2nd would be is 1st
where 3rd is would be 2nd
where 4th is would be 3rd
and where 5th gear would be is reverse...

ket me know if you got that clearly...
if not i can send a picture:cool:

i went ahead and put a picture up.
is this a T-15 pattern of a T-14 ?
Thanks

The gear ratio should be stamped on the ring gear.
If it was ran dry long enough that the gears are shot the bearings are shot also.
Are you saying you are looking for a whole new (used) diff. housing or just new bearings and gears?

I'm thinkin' that's a T18A, too... that's a neat Transmission ! Lots of folks pay the extra bucks to get one.

hmmm would there be any identification where i can find what kind of tranny it is?
and i suppose its a 4 speed then?

i have been looking for a used or new diff.
i just want 4wd :)
it says on my manufacturer sticker
GAWR FRNT. 2200
GWVR 3750
REAR 2700

Can you tell if the case is aluminum or iron?

If it's iron & a factory 4-speed most likely it's a T-18A

yup it is IRON!
so basically a t18A and a 4 speed.
i juat read about it and it is a unsynchronized 1st and Reverse Gears.

and it is a real strong tranny i love this thing!
it'll be better with a rebuild probaBLY:cool::cool::cool:

I would suggest you look for a used front axle in decent shape with the right ratio. Doing a ring and pinion is not the best first mechanic job and paying to have the R&P and the bearings replaced is going to be pretty expensive. You may call around and find one in a JY for a decent price and it will have a short warranty with it. To find the ratio, remove the cover and count the teeth on the big gear (ring) and the small gear (pinion) and divide the big one by the small one.

I'll bet it's a T-18 (no A), with the 4.02 first gear. The T18A wasn't a factory option until '76.

Their not know for smooth race car like shifting, But it works for me. I run a 401 & like the loud petal. The T-98 , T-18 , T-18A & T-19 are some of the toughest trannys on or off the road. I have a T-98 , T-18A & T-19 now in my rigs.;)
