1982 Jeep CJ-7 w/258 I-6 and SR-4 4spd. w/stock diff and t-case, 2011 Chevy Silverado Z-71 Ext cab.
In January I bought a 1982 Jeep CJ7 . It has approximately 96k miles on it's AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I-6 with SR4 4-spd Transmission . I believe this Transmission must have been a leftover from 1981 (my Jeep was manufactured in Fall '81), because all the info I can find tells me that the T-176 , T-4 , and T-5 were offered in '82 and later models. However, my shift pattern is an H with reverse being left and up outside the H, consistent with SR4 shift pattern. Does anyone else have an '82 with an SR4 ?

My next question: I need to replace my worn flywheel and starter. While I have my tranny down, should I go ahead and shuck the poorly-reviewed SR4 and replace with something else?

Ive been pretty happy with the T-176 transmissions Ive had. They are definately a good choice behind the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with the Dana 300 . The question is what are you looking for? If your going to swap the Transmission your going to need new driveshafts and such anyway. If your plans down the road are for higher horsepower and rockcrawling you may consider a T-18 or SM 465
