Hi guys,

I picked up a 1977 CJ7 (I6-AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l Engine, T-150 , Dana 20 ), unfortunately 1st gear was totally gone (seem that the gear ring is just totally shot)

So I went around looking for a replacement tranny, and I came across what seems to be a T-4 with Dana 300 Transfer Case and matching driveshafts.

I dropped the T-150 today, just to find out that the bell housings are not compatible and even the input shaft on the T-4 is different than the T-150 .

My OEM bell housing hole pattern does not fit the T-4 .. and the bell housing that was in the T-4 does not matches my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine block.. totally different.

SO ! I need help...

1. Is what I think the T-4 , really a T-4 ? It has stamped 13-51-027-901
(according to Novak website, it should be a T-4 , unless I'm missing something)

2. Shouldn't the T-4 be a direct replacement to the T-150 ?

Any input appreciated !

I would probably sell the Dana 300 and buy an adapter for a Ford T-18 to the Dana 20 . The ford T-18 will bolt up to the T-150 bellhousing (the jeep T-18 won't) and the input shaft dimensions will be the same as the T-150 . The overall length may be close enough to the T-4 /Dana 300 to use the driveshafts.

No. It is not a direct replacement but it will fit. You need a diferent clutch and bellhousing. Best bet would be to buy a clutch preasure plate kit. It comes with everything you'll need. Find a bellhousing from a later 80s 6 cylinder jeep. Most of them are drilled for about any transmision that came in the jeep.
You will also need to shorten your rear driveshaft and lengthen the front.

Or you could rebuild your T-150 . The AMC 150 is fairly decent Transmission with quite a few parts still available, until you drop in a Ford T-18 you won't see a big improvement in over all durability from any of those mentioned. The T-4 is a Transmission I'd stay away from. It's only slightly better than the much hated SR4 .
