I have a 1972 Jeep CJ5 (mfd Sep 1971) that was my grandfather's, which he bought from the original owner in 1977. I still have the transfer docs from 1977, an odometer statement from 1984, a title from 1993 when my dad had a new one issued, and a lot more. All of these historical docs list the Make as "Universal" and the Body Style as "JP", but why wouldn't the Make of the Jeep have been originally listed as "AMC" or "Jeep"? I thought only the 1953 CJ3b through the 1968 CJ5 were coined "Jeep Universal" or "Universal Jeep".

Any Jeep CJ historians out there that can help me understand why my 1972 would be listed as a Universal?

Thank you!

I to am the owner of a 72 CJ5 . I'll try and find what paperwork I have laying around, (title is in a safety deposit box) but I remember Universal as the body type. AMC bought Kaiser Jeep in 1970 and it took years for paperwork (titles) to catch up as it was not an important issue as it is today. Titles were simple.

Thanks CJ for looking into this, and also for all the guidance early in my build! The swap from the old cast iron 1 bbl to aluminum 2 bbl with added EFI has made my '72 a much more reliable and powerful Jeep. It's almost complete and I'll add my full build thread hopefully before Christmas.
