I replaced the water pump and thermostat on my CJ4 banger. Finally! Anyhow, I flushed all abouthe crud and :dung: out of the engine while it was open and the heater core. I added two gallons of coolant. Started up the old 4 banger and left the cap off like the manual states. I ran the jeep I think about 15 mins. I can't tell if the coolant is circulating. The radiator hoses are cool but the heater core hoses are hot. My temp gauge doesn't work. Other then get a gauge, what can I check to see if its working???

Are you sure you got the wire hooked back up on the temp probe?

Other than that, did you get the same opening temp thermostat?

You might try cleaning the wire connection on the temp gauge wire and temp probe...

See where we are at after that. Nothing you describe above "should" have hurt the temp gauge at all. It may still be short on water inside and the thermostat has not opened to allow it to swap the coolant.

There isn't much water in the system. Where is the wire plug into? Is it on ithe exhaust manifold towards the fire wall???

Turn on your heater control, if it blows hot air http://www.passatworld.com/forums/# you basically turned your heater core into a little mini radiator.

If this is the case your thermostat may be installed backwards.

I double checked the thermostat before I closed it. It points towards the radiator. I also ran tbe heater and it was hot...

Is the system filled? The 2 gallons you added would seem like enough fluid.

Even if the pump wasn't turning the top hose should get hot if it's blowing hot air. Could be a faulty thermostat?

To get a quick check on the coolant temp, you could try a meat thermometer if you have one. Just make sure you clean it afterwards.

Could you still have air in the system? And still a bit low on coolant? Drive it for a few minutes. When I did mine a few months ago, took a while to get both the large hoses hot....so long that I was questioning what went wrong....and my best guess was that it still "burped" some air out of the system. All good after a 5 minute drive, then topped off the coolant.

Hopefully all you have is an air pocket causing liquid not to contact the thermostat. Take your top radiator hose off at the radiator and see if you lose coolant. If nothing is in there, pour water or coolant down the hose on top of the thermostat and re-install the hose and give it another try. If an air pocket is causing it, the coolant on top may cause it to open and finish purging the system for you.

If you end up having to pull the thermostat again, make sure there is a small weep hole in the small disc that opens and closes. That will allow air to seep past the thermostat allowing coolant to fill like it needs to. If no hole is there, drill a small (wire size) hole in it before re-installing it.

Worst case scenario would be that the parts guy gave you a water pump with a reverse rotation of what you had on there to begin with. Hope not.

Thanks guys. I grew some extra balls and ran the jeep longer until I saw coolant bulging out of the top of the radiator and the radiator hoses got hot.

I checked the coolant with a thermometer and it was cool. After I saw the coolant bulging I checked the temp. It was 140. I guess it needed more time to open it with little coolant to help it open.

Thanks again guys. Now trying to find the themp gauge wire and sensor...

I'm not SURE on yours, but mine is a small post sticking out of the intake manifold on the drivers side of the thermostat housing that and wire slides over. Looks like this (I have a AMC 304 ):

Try to find some Google pictures or something of the engine you have.

It will be similar. (I assume)
