If I had to guess I would say a voltage regulator.

does the wire go to the distributor? does it go to the alternator?

That is the original mechanical voltage regulator. They make a solid state replacement that plugs into the same connector. I replaced all my stuff with a new alternator from powermaster. It has a built-in regulator and charges at idle.

The 77 should have had the regulator built into the alternator. This is surprising, to me. :D

Sorry I didn't check this thread earlier. I will see where the wires go tomorrow evening and let you know.

^^^^^^^ Yep, that's a regulator....what John says.....:chug:

So if mine's working and all is well - should I just let sleeping dogs lie...?

If it is in fact the regulator (sure looks like it to me ), it looks old and rough. I guess if it works, leave it but you might consider identifying a replacement for it before it fails, and it is likely to fail due to design and age. :chug:

Does this thing, in fact, plug into the alternator??

It appears to, I've been extremely out of my normal routine these last couple weeks so I only gave it a cursory look this morning. The wires out of it join up with a bundle that includes a couple from the solenoid on the fender, then travel down to the alternator. More photos tonight...

I guess I'd like to have at least a spare on hand, but as it is this is working (provided it is what we think it is ;-)
