:ocan anyone post up instructions on checking and packing wheel bearings on my CJ7 ...
THANKS

That one for the '85 is pretty much step by step.
They only way I see getting more detail is to get
a chiltons manual.

There is a special axle nut tool needed with 4 prongs and you will need a medium sized pair of snap ring pliers and a torque wrench.
Chilton's or Haynes is about as good as you will get for instructions.

Novice; I need more detail start to finish...

With you saying that, I highly recommend this book. Amazon or a local book store will carry them, worth every penny. Just a couple winters ago I replaced brakes, bearings, the whole nine yards on both sides, this book has great step by step pics for this and more.

THANKS , Ordered this manual this AM

you may find a used one on amazon.

I was planning to order that manual to fix a Wheel Bearing Module for my jeep. Was planning to get it done. Is there a more cheaper price for that book to be purchased? Thanks!

I run stage 8 locking nuts (not cheap) but you don't have to bend over the steel washers.Worth it to me they don't back off.

It's an old post (with a ton of a great info), so I hope I still get a reply.

As I start to get deeper into the CJ7 that I picked up last fall, more "stuff" is coming up - as expected.

While the steering feels pretty solid, I had it jacked up the other day and noticed that the front wheel will wobble around like crazy if I grab and shake it (I actaully thought the lug nuts were lose). I also hear a sort of metal scraping sound when spinning the tire.

From all the reading it sounds like a wheel bearing.

Question is - replace or repack? As long as I'm going through the trouble of pulling it appart, is putting in new bearings the better idea?

Thanks!

You really wont know until you get in there, but if it's been driven like that a while, and it was as you say wobbling like crazy, I'd plan to put a new one in.

Re-packing them is relatively easy, but if they are beyond "repair" get a new set or at least one for that side and be done.

Thanks for the quick reply and info.
I figured throwing a new bearing in there was the way to go.

Still real surprised about the amount of play in the wheel and that I didn't feel it with the limitted driving I've done.

Love the step by step instructions posted earlier. That and the rebuild manual that I'll order tonight, I'll give it a shot.

Thanks again.

this would be a great option if I had a Dana 44 or 60 front axle.
the only ones they make.:(

If the bearing show no signs of wear why spend the money? The rollers should be bright and shiney. The race shouldn't be gray or cloudy, but also shiney. When in doubt, replace.

Getting ready to order the new wheel bearings (inside and out), just a few more quick questions.

1- I put a quick movie of the wheel movement up on this site. If anyone can take a look and let me know your thoughts I'd appreciate it. Still can't believe I didn't feel that when driving.

2- Any recomendations on which new bearings to go with? There seem to be a lot to choose from, and a lot of difference in price.

3- A little different question, my rear wheels seem to stick out futher than the front wheels (past the fenders). Am I just seeing things? Any reason?

4- Is there a way to identify if the Dana 44 came off another CJ vs say a Scout or something else?

Thanks again for the help! :notworthy:

That's pretty dry... you can hear either it or the brakes rubbing when you spin it on your video.

You're going to need to take it apart to see the final tally. As for the bearings, I just ordered the factory replacements. I pack them often, so no need to spend big bucks.
