its a 76 dj5 postal jeep....inline 6 w/ a/t

trying to go 4x4 and trying to figure out what front diff i need to match my rear... :D

Now, how do i find the ratios? :/

That bent peice of metal between the 2 bolts on the left side of the diff should have some numbers on it.. Post up what they say.. Or see if it has it stamped.. it may be a number 3.73

Or pull the diff cover and see if you can find the number stamped on the ring gear. Should say some where 2 sets of numbers like 41 10 divide the big number (ring gear) by the little number (pinion) that will give you the geat ratio.

Or Pull the cover and count the teeth on the ring and pinion and divide like above.

I like pulling the cover because it will give you more insight into your jeep. you can see how worn the gear and bearings are.

Yea a 3.07 geared Dana 30 would be adequate for your rear axle, but there is a couple other things to decide before you get your front axle.
What Transfer Case will you run? what side does the front output go to? That will decide/limit what axles you can use. A CJ uses a passenger side diff, a YJ uses a driver's side diff.
If it were me, I'd dump that 3.07 geared axle for off-road use...its way too high, even with a automatic Transmission .
What will you do about steering issues? The right-hand steerng wheel presents a few challenges to make a good steering system without special work.
 
Also: CJ axles come in two widths. I am pretty sure that all of the DJ's used the narrow track axles so that the sliding door had enough clearance. Easiest swap in that case would be a narrow-track CJ Dana 30 .

The YJ high pinion Dana 30 's are stronger than the CJ units. But they are wider than narrow track axles. As you have no Transfer Case or 4wd tranny now you are wide open as to driver's drop (yj/xj/etc...) or passenger drop (cj). Although the cast-iron CJ Dana 20 & Dana 300 transfer cases are stronger than they yj/xj/newer cases, if you have the room an XJ 4.0 engine/tranny/transfer makes a dandy swap to match a YJ front.
