I have a 1965 cj-5 with the original 4cyl engine, t-90 traney and dana 18 transfer case. it has a 3" lift and was an air force jeep.
I have been working on an overheating problem for the last month. I replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and hoses. After I installed everything and started the engine for the first time it was running normal for about 5 min then the white smoke started coming out of the exhaust. I am pretty sure the head gasket needs to be replaced but was wondering if anyone has any other ideas of what could be causing this. I am going to have the head off so that would be the time to fix or look at anything else that may need to be replaced in there. The jeep is a 65 cj and it has the original 4cyl engine in it.

Sounds like a head gasket. Another possibility is a cracked block. Since you have the head off, take it to a shop and have it magnufluxed. This will tell you if there is an issue with the head as far as leaks. If it's the block, there is no fix other then replacement. :(

Is that something an avarage shop has the ability to do?

More than likely it's the head gasket.Aside from a cracked block it could also be a warped head. Depending on how bad your overheating problem was, if you didn't run it until it seized I would bet on the gasket. As CJim7 pointed out, there is no good fix for a cracked block but the head can be milled. A leaking head gasket is pretty obvious once you take the head off. Let us know what you find.

Take it to a place that deals with engines and rebuilds. They should be able to magnaflux it. If not, they will know someplace that can.

Thanks for the help. I get the head milled, and installed a new gasket and just about have it back together again. 2 head bolts are going in hard so I can't tork them properly so I am taking my time figuring that out before I add new fluids and start it up.

You should probably run a tap down each bolt hole before trying to install the head bolts. May help with that.
