Ok so i have a 78 CJ7 Golden Eagle that i am fixing up. Sadly for me there is a birdsnest of wires hanging from the dash that frankly im just kinda scared to mess with lol . My question is is there a wiring harness out there that i can buy that would just run my essetials such as headlights taillights gauge lights ect. Its gonna be a trail rig but i want it to be legal for street driving too. Any input is helpful. Thanks!

there are plenty of them, I went with the painless replacement harness, its very nice, there are also universal harnesses out there as well

ya i called painless and the guy said all he had was a complete OEM replacement for the cj but i was hoping to find something that was a little more simple...i mean do i really need every single wire hooked up to everything or is there things that are not necessary? Im new to the jeep world so thanks for answering!

Also if i went with a whole new harness... how difficult in yalls opinion is it to install?

Hmmm that was a retarded answer from painless as he has several universal harness sets and at least 3 OEM harness sets that I have seen.... in a trail rig you need a working ignition, charging, and starting circuit minimum, which is not much or hard to do straight from auto zone's help me section.... It will take a decent understanding of automotive electrical function to get it done though. I would not say that rewiring a vehicle is something you want to tackle without help but once you understand it and can read electrical schematics its not to bad, I would say if it currently works leave it

I thought that was odd too but oh well and ya it seems to work fine so i guess i can strap the wires up with some zip ties and leave it. Thanks for the help!:chug:

Painess isn't the only player in that game. EZ-wire is a good source, and much cheaper than PLW.
There are others as well.
AS for as how easy it is, if ou take your time and read the directions, its not too hard to do.

I was looking for a harness for my tail light recently and I thought I saw one of the Catalog companies that specialize in 4WD had a harness that was called "Basic Jeep Wiring harness" and it wasn't that expensive either.

Do you remember the catalog? That sounds like its right up my alley lol

Also have another quick question...what is the black box bolted to the inside of the driver side front fender... I took mine off and the is gravel and sticky :dung: inside so I'm guessing it's fried. There are wires running in and out of it:(

Sounds like your ignition module
