Hey all, this is my two day owned 1965 CJ5 . I started tearing everything off Sunday. I'm going to have a bunch of work ahead of me but am in no hurry to complete just slow and steady. I used to rebuild old bmw s with my dad, this will be my first rebuild by myself. I plan on restoring the body and all working parts. I only plan on modifying the gas tank location, bumpers, suspension and wheels. Hopefully everything else will be restored to like new condition.

Started tearing down first day I had it.

Tail lights off, stripped of 99% of wires, still have a nut under the grill I can't get of going to have to cut it. Spent the better part of 45 minutes trying to unscrew self locking screws which the po installed in the floor board along with some aluminum from some kind of tank, deff a Arkansas farm truck. Still optimistic a lot of welding to the body, which im going to have to pay for out of house. The rest I feel confidant with. Cheers, work day 2.

Welcome,

Looks in pretty good shape, a lot to work with.
I see the PO used the side tire mount on the tailgate trick. :D

Yeah last po said I think a antenna was on the back passenger rear, I said no that's where the tire rack was supposed to go. Come to find out they welded and bolted it to the tail gate, yippie!

Quick tear off before dinner, end of day 2 work. Oh and I have decided there is no clean way to take off a fuel tank.

Day 3, alternator off (longest bolt of my life). Driver aluminum floor board off. Exhaust system unbolted still needs to be cut free. Steering wheel nut off, could not get the steering wheel off seems to be stuck after repeated meetings with Mr. Hammer. Unbolted steering housing but could not get housing off arm need to do se research. Fuel pump looks original. Silver lining there is a new plastic fuel filter whoopie! Sprayed some engine cleaner on engine and looks like this project could turn out nice. I'm debating getting a new tub or patch working old one. Frame looks good still that's a pluss.

3.5 old fuel line out, rubber one already out. I cannot get my pitman arm out of the socket on the steering box and I cannot get my steering wheel off, any suggestions would be appreciated!! http://www.willysoverland.com/repli-tubs/ planing on using this company to buy a whole new tub. I would appreciate a testimony or condemnation from some one who has used them.

I forgot to mention so far I have only used a good ratchet set and screw divers. The next faze will include air powered tools.

You are a true Jeep addict! Like the rest of us, once you start, you just cant stop! Love the progress! Keep up the posts.

Work day 4. TuB OFF!!! Whoop whoop! Only cost me one drill bit, but worth it. Drilled through roughly 6/7 bolts. I know this is not a huge milestone but as hard as those bolts where I'm pretty proud. Still have not bought a compressor with tools waiting for the funds. I started my archeological dig on the Transmission because there is roughly .25-.50 inch of muddy grease all on the bottom side. Oh and I've decided after seeing my very religious underside, (holey), im for sure buying a new tub or need a different one to refab.

Day 5/6, not really worth posting but I have been encouraged to post every bit of the process. I'm in cleaning mode. I used some purple cleaner and some engine and brake cleaner. I washed parts with water hose and have scrapped and scrapped and wire brushed and scrapped and wire brushed some more. I'm using a electric screw driver I had with 4/5 dollar wire brushes bought from generic auto parts store. I had trouble identifying the last part but I was told it was the starter motor and seloniod.(should have trusted my dad) Looks pretty new the only thing I could not identify on the engine. I want to get everything media blasted. My dip stick tube is bent that's the only thing I thing I not found online for sale.

Day 7 we have powa! Even if not that much my buddy let me have his air compressor that is home made. He bought it at a estate sale. So I bought a angle grinder with hose, accessories, ext. I was finally able to grind off some stubborn bolts. I finally got the grill off! Bled the brakes and master cylinder there was only one bleeder nut intact so I used that one and started taking off the master cylinder and break line. My neighbor let me borrow his engine lift. I'm probably going to lift the engine and Transmission together and set them off to the side to get the frame blasted and coated. I'm going to replace motor and Transmission mounts.

Day 8 did not have time to take pictures because the light was bad. I took off all the brake lines, drive train is disconnected and prepped all the bolts to lift the engine. Should have the frame off soon to be blasted and painted.

Day 9 it was scary but I got the motor and Transmission out. I decided to go with three chain pull which was not a good idea. The motor started twisting on me when I lifted it out and could not get the Transmission high enough to clear the frame. I had to use the good old come-along to even it out and keep it from rolling. Still have to disconnect the steering arms but other than that it's ready to go. I have all the shocks off and prepped the bolts on the shackles to that should be quick.
