I am using a power steering gear box from a 1974 CJ5 in my 1959 CJ5 project. I don't know if I am counting the shaft splines wrong and measuring the shaft diamater wrong, but I am not sure which "U" joint to use to mate this gear box to a DD shaft. I count 31 splines (which no one seems to have heard of) and measure the diameter to be 13/16" as measured around the round part of the gear box shaft (also, no one seems to have heard of this diameter). Now, if I count the valleys between the spline ribs, the count is 30, and if I measure the shaft at the flat part, the diameter is 3/4". Is this the correct location to measure? I looked at Morris and a few others and found the OEM couppler. Problem is that although I am sure the spline count would match, I have no idea what the other side of this bell like couppler looks like, and if I could connect a 3/4" or even 1" DD shaft. Any ideas?

Check out the Borgeson Steering site. They have a chart that lists the different steering gears and the SPLINE COUNT ! It should help you decide.
Far as I know the Saginaw P/S box is 13/16"-36 spline .
Someone will be along shortly if I am not accurate on my info.
Cheers, mike s.:)

Thanks 73cj. A stock shaft will not work. This is a 59 body on a 60 frame w/74 axles a 75 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 w/headers and a 97 Grand Cherokee steering column. Steering shaft needs to go places a stock shaft was never intended to go.

Thanks mstar, the light went on! The shaft is 13/16", but it has a flat spot on it. If I extrapolate the splines all the way around, the count would probably be 36. I think I will order a U joint and see.

Not only do they have assemblies but all the right parts. If you call them they can be most useful. They might give you a lightbulb moment? :D
