I am attempting to diagnose an issue with the charging/electrical system on a newly inherited 1976 CJ7 . After removing the alternator and getting it tested, I discovered it is missing a wire that connects to the 2 prongs on the back. A little research seems to show that this is the P10SI wire. If it is, and I get that, I see one wire loops to the back of the alternator but what is the easiest location to place the white excite wire?

I am very new to this and only have started wrenching on this due to it being inherited this week. Please let me know if any of the assumptions I've made here are incorrect!

A quick fix is to the plus right on the alternator to get it to charge but that gets you battery voltage @ the alternator which is technically wrong (but works )
The best is as close to the battery.
We have a TSM for download HERE. I think it may show a location. I would check but I'm on my phone, away from home. I do know it's chapter three.

Thank you for your help. I think I understand where the one that goes to the plus goes (the sense wire). Maybe I used the wrong description. I am trying to understand where the other wire goes (the excite wire).

The #2 prong is the sense of excited terminal. #1 is the indicator light. #2 should be as close to the battery as possible so it picks up batter voltage and not charging voltage.

Oh I'll have to check if it is the moto craft in the morning. Is there a big difference in where these wires go? I think the goal for now is just finding a spot that it would work. Again, thank you for your help!

It would help to know the engine. Eight cyl have Motocraft and six cyl have AC Delco.
