1976 CJ5 258cc motor, T-18 Trans 4 speed, model 20 transfer case. 4:10 gears, Dana 30 front, AMC 20 rear.
Hi
I am a new member to this forum. I have a 1976 CJ5 that I bought in 1982 and disassembled in 1989. I have over the years worked on restoring it to its new condition. The frame and body were painted, the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l motor, T-18 and model 20 Transfer Case rebuilt. I have bought most of the new parts, and would like to put it back together. At this time the body is off the frame and engine, Transmission , Transfer Case has not been installed. The motor has been on an engine stand since 2003 when I got it back from the builder. It has a clifford cam, .030 ceramic pistons, and ferrea valves. I am adding a clifford manifold with a 4 barrel holly carb, front power disc brakes & power steering.

:ww: from Colorado it will be nice when you get it back together.

Nice project. Very cool that you've had it so long. I have a 76 CJ5 myself...:chug:

My jeep was originally that burnt orange color. I had the body dipped in an "acid bath" that removed all the paint and any rust. Then it was primed and painted "oxford white" (which is a factory ford color to match my 1996 F250). I added the full roll cage and made a removeable tire carrier in the back for a spare tire. I re-installed the wiring and dash with new stainless steel hardware.

Well it's been a while since my last post in Oct. 2012.

Here's the latest update.

I stripped the frame down and had it sand blasted and powder coated in semi-gloss black. I had the AMC20 rebuilt, with one piece axles, and all new drum brake hardware.

New black Energy Suspension urethane bushings for all the springs and Confer shackles.

I installed a 26 gallon gas tank from North West Metal Products and have replaced all the nuts, bolts, and washers in stainless steel.

The Dana 30 front axle with disc brakes is my next step to rebuild.

Otherwise busy cleaning and repainting other future reusable parts!

I really applaud your effort with this project. I took my 1980 CJ5 apart the weekend after Thanksgiving last year and it is just killing me that it has taken this long to get where I'm at! Sounds like you have a goal in mind and are going about it correctly.

Here are photos of the frame after I got it back from the powder coating shop. I will add more photos with the new rebuilt AMC20 rear end soon.

Today I painted and installed the new power steering box.

Heres some current pictures of my progress since I got the frame back from the powder coaters.

I am waiting on my new emergency brake cables this week, and will be dropping off the Dana 30 front axle at the shop for a complete rebuild.
