1977 CJ5 lower steering shaft bearing rattle.

Hi everyone.

I need suggestions. The lower steering shaft rattles and does not fit tight in the column housing. I used the Omix and the Crown kits and same rattle. The fit is tight on the shaft and the retainers fit correctly. Last option I can think of is a band clamp around the housing.

Using your own improvements sound like a good idea, have you considered one made by Borgeson?

I have a borgeson shaft, same rattle. It's the lower column bearing rattling in the housing

At which end of the shaft are you referring to?

The lower steering column bearing.

On my '86, there is no bearing on the lower part of the shaft, but a well designed u-joint with set screws to the shaft. The next bearing down would be in the steering gear box. There is a bearing on the upper end which is pretty exposed to dirt so I covered it up with electrical tape after replacement.
