I'm in the process of rebuilding to install a 1977 disk brake front axle on my 1975 CJ5 . I've got several manuals, but I'm short on one that shows this short lived "Big" rotor brake system. I have and can find plenty examples of the later GM set-up, but the Ford set-up eludes me. What I need is a simple diagram showing the way the brake caliper housing, dust shield, and spindle nest together. There older jeeps didn't have disk brakes and newer Jeeps have the far more common GM style without the big casting. I hate to ask, but is there a PDF for a 1977 CJ out there somewhere?

This is frustrating. I can see everything BUT what I need. Lots of brake rotor assembly diagrams. Lots of Dana 30 axle diagrams. Nothing that shows what happens between the two IE the dust shield and caliper bracket casting.

Is this it-:confused::confused:

Found this-Hope it helps-
CJ Dana 30s

Early Dana 30s used a 11"x2" drum brake. Disk brakes were optional in 1976 and standard starting in 1977. Between '76-'78 the disk brakes used a large 10-1/2"x1-1/8" rotor. The "big brake" setup uses a 6 bolt caliper mounting bracket that goes between the knuckle and the spindle. The caliper is keyed to the mouting bracket and the rotor should apear wide when looking on edge. Rubber brake hoses with brass banjo fitting end. These rotors, calipers, and pads are compatible with the Scout II.

Nope, that diagram is plentiful. The anchor plate is entirely different. It's a casting that attaches to the 8 or 9 bolts that ultimately hold the spindle in place. I can't remember if the Anchor plate went on before or after the rotor dust shield or if the shield goes directly under the rotor. You'd think it was obvious. About 8 months ago I took the axle apart thinking that I had an assembly diagram, unfortunately this axle is different enough so when you get down to the small stuff what I have simply won't work.

I believe it is spindle, caliper 6 bolt support bracket, then the dust shield.
Should only assemble one way due to the ID openings of those components and dust shield opening orientation.

EXACTLY what I needed. All the diagrams I've seen were like the one Lumpy linked to with only the little upper left hand corner detail rather than the one you are showing. Some details or schematics didn't even show the dust shield. It is odd in the way the Jeep manual shows this area. This schematic shows the brake and the hub in detail. If you want to see something similar for the spindle you have to go someplace else. Yes, there is some logic there, but if I were drawing this I'd include a note saying where the hub detail can be found.

Thanks a bunch, this really helped.

THX hagar-The last thing we need is a confused 'Hedgehog' run'n around. :D

you're welcome....both of you.

The situation can get a little prickly..... Get it prickly, hedgehog, hedgehogs are covered in prickly spikes ... Ohhh how I make myself laugh

And back to business as usual. Yes, I could have slapped it together, but some of the tolerances are close in this area. Knowing me I'd put it together wrong and damage something taking it back apart. That would be bad. With the correct schematic it's all simple, without it there is a bit of a guessing game. I do know the hub pretty well, but I've never before gone as deep as removing the dust shield.
