- 1978 Jeep CJ5 with AMC 390, T-150 3 speed transmission, Dana 20 rear and Dana 30 front, and Dana 20 transfer case.
I inherited a 1978 CJ5 from a friend and after storing it for the last 3 years I decided it was time to start working on it. From what my buddy told me before giving it to me, he stopped driving the Jeep about 15 years ago because he was tired of replacing the drive shafts. At some point while he had it, he had swapped the original AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l for an AMC AMX 390. Other than the engine the entire jeep was stock.
I decided that part of this rebuild would be to try and replace the engine with a more reasonable engine, since I am not planning on drag racing the damn thing, or replacing all the drive train to match the engine.
I don't have any before pictures just the ones since I got it moved into the garage.
Next I'm going to pull the axles and strip the fuel and brake lines so I can clean and paint the frame. Luckily the frame doesn't appear to have any cracks and isn't rusted through anywhere.
So, that's where I'm at now.
