Jeep gods -

I recently replaced my shocks on my 78/CJ5 /v8 and WOW it's like a new ride. :D Pretty sure they've never been replaced and if so it was once.
Now I would like to increase the response in the sttering a little bit with a steering stabilizer kit. There is just a tiny bit of play in the steering wheel and for my piece of mind I would like to make her a little tighter.....:rolleyes:

any suggested kits?

Steering stabilizer will not help your situation, You need to track down the loose/worn parts and replace them to acheive tight steering.
A steering stailizer is to reduce input to the steering wheel if you hit something with your tire like a parking curb stop or large rock etc.

Interesting. I read up on a thread discussing similar issue with a 73 CJ5 and some of the members suggested the same thing you are. People said the stabilizer might mask a larger or more critical issue.
Any key areas I should look into? I'm a novice at trouble shooting auto issues to a point. I can replace just about anything by reading but trouble shooting is a little different.
Like i said the "play" is subtle and comes into affect when I find a depression or rut in the road caused over time by traffic. Would larger tires cause this?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First off to get perfectly responsive steering in a CJ is not possible in the real world, but if you lay on your back under the front end and have a second person turn the wheel back and forth just the amount that play exists you should see your issue(s).
Some of the possible causes;
Loose wheel bearings
loose/worn knuckle king pins
loose/worn ball ends
worn steering box
Steering gear box loose on mounts
Worn steering intermediate shaft
Loose shackles allowing entire frond end to move side to side

Something I have found and is pretty well known is the flimsey gear box mount causes lose of wheel input and benifits from a new HD mount and or just the gear box brace on your existing mount will help.
