Restoring CJ7, bought with a SB400, sacrificed another cj7 to have dana 300, slanted roll bar, good fenders and grill, patch panels. Having a th350 built now. Building for Daily Driver
Hello I'm new to this site and still trying to figure out how it all works. Anyways I am in the process of re doing my 79 CJ7 . It came factory with the QuadraTrac and i believe its a Canadian built jeep so it has a lot of rust issues that I've already repaired. I bought an 84 CJ7 also for a parts jeep and had to decide which way to go as far as drivetrain parts and all i would use.
THE BODY: The 84 had a rough life and someone had allready cut on the body and was pretty much carrying an inch of bondo on top of that so i decided to use the 79 body which had some rust issues i'd have to fix. What i did to make a good tub from both is drill out all the factory spot welds from the 79 drivers rocker, drivers floor pan, rear corners and rear floor and replace with the 84 panels. I then kept the 79 hood, tailgate and windshield frame, the 84 grill, fenders and roll bar and scraped the rest.
THE FRAME : The 84 had the best frame. The previous owner had started building the 84 frame up and it was allready fresh black, new 4" springs and all new grade 8 bolts in most places. Plus it had wide track axles that i've allways wanted. The 79 was shot and rusted thru.
THE DRIVETRAIIN : Im all about keeping a cj all AMC but i had two jeeps and a Limited budget, so keep that in mind:chug:. The 79 had a sbc 400 that ran great with a factory GM Turbo 400 QuadraTrac tranny that was slipping. The 84 had an inline 6 that was rained in that filled two oil change pans with water before oil drained out.. It was a factory auto with a Dana 300 . So, i kept the Dana 300 of coarse and the sb400. I ordered a spud shaft from advance adapters for $207 to mate a th350 with the Dana 300 . I am having the tranny built now from my father in law who owns a tranny shop. I've never owned an auto jeep so im nervous about it but i think now that im 31 i'll like it.
I've since welded the holes and panels up on the tub and started painting the panels Orange Crush Metallic a few at a time. I grew up with my Daddy painting cars for a living in our back yard so im doing it all my self. Im up to date on my progress and have the tub mounted with new rubber mounts, new rims and tires and new brakes so ill upload the photos I have asap although my memory card or my 1 year old son Captain have deleted all my photos of the Jeep so far but i still have a few.

Looks good, take your time and do it right-good luck and have fun,I'm about done with my rebuild, can't wait to get back on the road!!

That was pretty quick. :) How long have you been working on it. Looks like a nice Cj. :chug:

Always happy to see some more Alabama cj's rolling around here. Looking forward to the finished product

Thanks. Yeah I'm kinda catching up on my progress. I've worked on the body every weekend for the past 2 months. I painted it this past weekend so I'll have those pics up soon.

I did the heater core swap and blazer motor upgrade this weekend and started putting everything back together

I didn't keep up with this thread and now I can't edit. This wasn't updated while I was bulding and I ended up with the main part of the 84 tub. I can't fix the year of this thread to make it correct.

Don't worry about it! We are all good here, just post any updates and my self or a Mod can make changes to the title! :ww: back :chug:

I'm a little confused. You have a GM Turbo 400 but your going to put a TH350 in. Also you only ordered only the Transmission shaft. How are you going to bolt the Dana 300 to the Transmission without an adapter.

Welcome back, be sure to post a lot of pics - engine bay, underneath etc.. Also have fun with your Jeep.

Duct tape! ;) We all know if that don't fix it, it's broke.

Nah, it's apparently a well-kept secret - I did the same thing he's apparently doing for the Transmission /x-fer case. You can mate the two very inexpensively using just the input spud for the Dana 300 using a NP208-TH350 adapter. They nearly give these away on the flea-bay.

Sorry to butt in, there. Just wanted to say that this is some good looking work!
