I have a 1983 Jeep CJ7 4 speed that I am trying to figure out how to get the ignition switch out. There are no screws or bolts holding it in. I have read the Chilton instructions and still have not been able to get it out. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I assume you mean the switch and not the keyed part. I rebuilt my column as I had some issue with blinker part being broken, although it was a few years ago. I did not enjoy it :D.

This is from another thread- i replaced the ignition switch on my 78. it is tight in there, but i loosened up the bolts holding the column in place just behind the dash and got some slack, allowing the coulmn to drop about a half an inch or so in order to get my stubby fingers in there. also, loosening the switch itself will allow you to move it up or down the column a very short distance which may solve your problem.

2 screws, down the bottom of your column...believe they are 5/16"...connected to cylinder by a rod/link...good luck

you need to pull the steering wheel
you need a wheel puller
a gm compression ring tool
couple of flathead screwdrivers
maybe a T27 torx
alot of patience
alot of beer:D

check my pics it has (maybe some useful info)

but question

why you need to replace?

I already have the steering wheel and the ring off. I still can't get the switch out. The guy I bought the jeep from gave me a new switch and did not have a key to the old switch.

After the steering wheel is off you need to compress the star looking thing pull the snap ring. Pull the guts out. You will be able to see the side of your switch there is a flat thing that sticks out a little on the side, push it in with a screwdriver and pull the whole thing out. You have to hold that piece down while you pull. It's easy once you see how it comes out. There is also videos on YouTube on how to do this

I have stuck all different kinds of tools in the hole pushing that thing every which way and pulling out on the switch and it just won't budge.I don't have a key for the switch. By looking at the new switch it is easy to see the part that needs to be pushed in. I am thinking about screwing a slide hammer into the slot where you put the key in and then jirking it out. But I am afraid it might damage something in the colume that would effect holding the new switch in.

Take a pic please

pre 78 are the snap in locks
78 and newer are held in with a bolt
did the PO say anything about the column being swapped out before

the "snap in" can be stubborn I spray WD40 around the "slot " area then flathead screwdriver and tap it lightly with a hammer

the dent puller you mentioned works on the snap in but there is a hard plate that needs to come off ( makes it easier) right at the key hole braided on
