I have a 1984 CJ7 with loose steering. What is the best way to correct this/ There is a lot of play in the steering wheel.

Check alignment, wheel bearing tightness, steering shaft(Coupler, I think it is called) , rod ends, steering column bearings, frame cracks, suspension, and steering box is last on the list. A guy made a great post on this forum on that subject, maybe somebody can find it.

X2.on the thread here. It is set up like a troubleshooting walk through.

Always good to have someone grab the wheel and rock it whil you watch what the moving parts. Steering box could be loose etc.

If ball joints, bearings etc ck out ok.
Most of the time it's either the CV joint at the bottom of the steering column shaft or the 'u-joint' near the top.
You really need to have this ck'd by a 'pro', if it's really bad-YOUR DANGEROUS to others on the road.
ALSO-You really should get a copy of the REAL Factory Service Manual(NOT Chilton or Haynes).
You really should fill out the info on your jeep so it's easier for us to help YOU--
