What has been the past expereince with shims on a 2.5 inch lift. Were they needed. And on average does a 2.5 lift need a double cardone. I know that it can all change from jeep to jeep but was wondering what has been the past results of such a lift on a 81 CJ5 ? This is with Danna 300 And T-176 .

All situations can vary but you'll most likely be okay at only 2.5" over stock. I ran about a 2 3/4" lift for many years without issue. But when I went to 3 1/2" then I had caster issues with the front. The rear still worked okay but I'm sure the driveline angles didn't match. But then again the Jeep didn't see a whole lot of mileage in the years following the change so I didn't notice any faster wear on the driveshaft u-joints.
I would shim the rear before I spent the cash for a cv joint and shorter driveshaft.

I would do the DC driveshaft on a CJ5 only if you get vibration at highways speeds. Other Jeeps are long enough to not need one. My CJ5 did end up needing one since the whole shaft was only 16 inches long. Don't forget that driveline length plays a factor. A CJ5 with a three speed may not need a shaft change.
