I have been looking at rebuilding my 67 CJ5 and was wondering if anyone had any great ideas on a cheap short block or long block and where I might find one. I am thinking I might rebuild a different engine and then pulling the one I have and replacing it....Any suggestions....:chug:

Billy. I own 2 jeeps with 225s. I will tell you that looking for a cheap core engine may be the holy grail. I would call J&W Wreckers in Antelope Valley CA as a place to start, watch craigslist, and post on any CJ website I could find

Whats wrong with the one thats in it now?

It smokes really bad. And it is constant.

I'm guessing you don't want to rebuild it? They are good engines.
You might get away with just needing rings and or new valve guides.

I am thinking of rebuilding the engine but was hoping to rebuild another one so I could just swap them out. Less down time with out my play toy. Plus I have heard that there are interchangeable parts from a 225odd and a 231 even. And with the other mods this jeep had when I bought it there could be something not right with engine.

I'm not sure what else would bolt in. I'm sure Baja will have some ideas for you. He should be along sometime.

the 231 is the next generation of the 225
As I said in a earlier post, call J&W wreckers
the problem with getting a newer version of the V is part of the advantage to the 225 is it's 50 pound fly wheel. it helps develop the huge amount of torque this engine has. no other version but the Jeep 225 has this, and the flywheel has to be balance on the engine because of the odd fire crankshaft so you just cannot switch it out. As far as a engine built to go offroad the 225 is better than the 231 for where the torque is in the rpm range and how much is developed. So sticking with a 225 is better than switching out to the 231.
After Buick bought back the V6 tooling, and after producing a few years of the 231 they went to a 6 journal even fire pattern for the V6 which can get much better HP but as in all high reving engines the torque is not where we want it for a great wheeling engine. Plus that means you have to swap out so many things to make it compatible.
I would personally stick with the 225 as your entire timing system is set up for the odd fire 3 crank journal system and buying a short block even fire would mean sourcing a bunch of parts not compatible from your 225.
hope this helps

I have a 231 odd-fire that has less then ten hours on it. I'm sure it will bolt right in. Its a napa rebuilt. I'm in Washington state.:)

You can look for late 75 to mid 77 Pontiac, olds and buick cars some have odd-fire 231's in them.
