Trans 2nd gear synchro?

I am concidering purchasing a mid 70’s CJ7 . With a V-8 and a T-178 4 speed. The owner is telling me that he thinks the 2 nd gear synchro is starting to go . When it is going down a hill in 2nd It pops out of gear from time to time. Is this a major repair and /or a start to something more serious? Would new gear oil help this issue?

Changing gear oil may help, especially if what is in it now is the wrong type of oil, but it is likely synchros that are worn out. No better way to start learning how to work on a CJ than to tear it apart and rebuild the Transmission . It isnt too hard to rebuild really, and parts are available. Look at Novak Conversions site for starters.
