Guys,
I am installing a 3" body lift on 1980 CJ5 , I drilled out steering pins but cannot get the steering shafts to seperate, any ideas

Are you talking about the slip joint in the center of the column to box shaft?

If you've got the nylon style pin, try heating it up with a torch. I think they actually pour melted plastic into the joint. It was that way on a 79 CJ5 I worked on.

yes that is what i am talking about, I could tell that is was some sort of plastic. I will try the heat, thanks

The steering shaft is held onto the steering gearbox with a coupler like this bottom one:

then the bottom half of the shaft can compress into the top half. The steering shaft is telescopic. This is to compensate for flex between the body and frame or when you are in a front end crash.

When I took my steering shaft out the 2 halfs came apart but you may need to heat up the joint with a torch.

Edit: I'm not sure if the shaft is really supposed to be telescopic but it made it easy to remove when the 2 pieces slid apart. When I am rock crawling I can hear the shaft compress and extend. I think there is plastic in there. Get out the torch.

The plastic was designed to shear and collapse. Federal mandate to eliminate the column from going through your chest on impact.

Mine moves by design yet will still collapse. Flaming river

Really helps from taking out your steering gear input seal when you're twisting your frame offroad.

Sounds like a good mandate.
I'd rather break a plastic pin instead of having a steel rod hit me in the chest.

How much travel does that have?
