In the last month I have made 4 orders with 4WheelParts and only one has gone through without a hitch. Today I received a Moser one piece axle kit to replace my spun two piece only to find the box was kind of beat, had been opened, and resealed (half of the carton staples pulled loose and the box taped back shut)… and it was missing everything but the shafts. I know this could be Moser’s fault or even UPS (though they only shipped it across town apparently)… but the 4wd C.S. Rep told me that the kit has been on the shelf for a couple of years, so it sounds far more likely to me that someone in the warehouse pulled all the ancillary parts out for some reason.

I don’t have a very lengthy history with them, so I don’t know if I am just having bad luck or if they just don’t have it together when it comes to equipment for something older then a TJ? I’ve only ever seen newer vehicles at their stores and known people with newer vehicles to use them. According to one of the salesmen, they don’t stock anything for a CJ at any of the stores around here because “nobody around here still has a CJ” so I’ve got to wait at least a week for anything from them anyway, so it is not like I’m saving any time on the front end; the local stores just makes for easier returns and such when there is a problem which I feel like is going to be pretty much all the time with them. If they didn’t have retail locations nearby I probably would not have even ordered anything from them; their pricing isn’t bad pretty much on par from what I can tell, I’m just a bit of a sucker for having a person I can see selling me stuff rather than just a click of the mouse though.

I could probably keep going about this for a while because I’m irritated at them, so I’ll stop here and wait to hear anyone else’s opinion on them while I have a beer :wasted:

Thanks guys,
Tony

I have essentially stopped doing business with 4WD Hardware since they were bought out by 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers. They used to be an excellent company and are still riding on that rep. However stories like yours are becoming more common, there prices have become less competitive and they seemed to have stopped supporting CJers as well as they used to.

I use Ebay, Morris 4x4, Sometimes Oconee and sometimes Quadratech.

I’m probably going to end up dropping it on their counter tomorrow after I get done at work but I’ll give their C.S. Rep until then to convince me otherwise (just doubtful he will really try).

I have found the AutoZone near me to be pretty good, they have a warehouse in the area so most parts are not more than a day away; but they don’t have a fair number of things, which are what I turned to 4wd for.

I would love to find a mom & pop shop to do business with, just haven’t found one nearby that isn’t all about putting 10" lifts and $10,000 worth of rims on a truck for the tapout crowd. I did go by Collins Brothers last week while I was out that way but they are about an hour away and a bit on the pricey side for the brands parts that they sell.

I’ll probably end up going the 100% online route; just prefer to do business with a human. I don’t know what it is, at thirty I’m young enough that I cannot remember a time that I didn’t have a computer (my father bought an Apple IIc in ’85) and I spend at least eight hours a day on a computer between work and hobbies, but I still don’t like doing business that way.

Transamerican owns several of the major 4wd online shops and brands. Their ownership has not been a good thing for the consumer. If nothing else they are eliminating the competition and their size may mean they will survive this slump while the economy continues to take out even more of their competition. I have always been treated well by Morris. Jeep Parts, Jeep Accessories, Jeep Soft Tops at Morris 4x4 Center

I used Quadratec for awhile but lately have been using Morris, the only time I used 4 wheel parts was for my wire harness which still took a week to get not much of a point in going there

I would drop it on the counter and ask why they would ever send you such junk.

I live about 10 minutes from the Plano store and have things shipped there to avoid shipping charges and it works well when the stuff they are selling is not as advertised or messed up. then you get to return it to the store rather than shipping it back to the original vendor.

I have not met any highly motivated rocket surgeons at the counter and the store stock is pretty sad.

Unfortunately I have had issues with just about every supplier I have done business with so I just find what I need and hope for the best. The options are not that numerous.

Meh, OK. No real issues with them, I occasionally get something from them if they have it and I want it that day.

They are more for the buy it vs build it crowd. They put upgraded parts and axles and stuff on JK's that cost more than a CJ :D. If you would have paid them to install axle you would have got all the parts. HAHA, JK!

Thank you guys for the input; doesn’t sound like a rash of bad luck then.
I gave the C.S. Rep until I was done at work, still haven’t heard back from him; so I went over to the Dallas store and just did a straight return.

Either Moser or Superior are fine, they both get pretty much the same solid reviews; the only reason I ordered the Moser over the Superior was that it was a $50 price difference there.

I have no issues with the Denver 4WD. We have a second one in the area and that one is bad. The guys at the counter act like you are such a hinderance to their hacking on a computer, and give you zero information on what you are looking for. Ex: I was looking at dual steering stabilizers, and the guy at the counter just ordered it for me without asking if I had any of the pre requisites met like a 4" lift and an after market sway bar. So I paid for a part that I couldnt even use at the time. The Denver one however, has done me right on numerous occasions, and taken care of issues they noticed while my rig was in their shop at no extra cost to me. About the shipping, I always have whatever I order delivered straight to the shop so when I pick it up, zero blame can be placed on me since I have not yet even touched the package. On the one occasion I had a damaged package they gave me the option of money back right there, or waiting for a replacement. Sounds like I have found a one in a million store.

I use the shop in Colorado springs and have never had a problem. I also have my parts shipped to the store.

I think the problem is the "Fast Food" business style of the big guys. I mean they would rather stock parts for and service new TJ and JK Jeeps than try to go through the plethera of changes to the OLD CJ line.
Face it we are driving antique vehicles, we actually are a specialty market.
I guess I am lucky, I have 2 shops close to me that have years of experience with CJs and I also do business with Herm and Morris 4x4 shop out of Florida that does so well with CJs and have had great luck getting what I need not hat some 18 year old thinks I need.

It's actually inventory turn. Inventory is a huge amount of the percentage to a company's EBIT ( Earnings before interest and taxes ). Since older CJ's do not turn inventory as they did before (getting old) it is not dollar sound to stock CJ parts unless that is your specialty...

I haven't used them since about 1997. They went "commercial" and then were bought up by TransAmerica and started that whole issue incommando spoke of. I will however still use 4WD Inc but that's mainly to save on tax and shipping, otherwise it's mostly Quadratec via the local off-road shop that gets my business.

Poor service and dont stand behind what they sell.

I still use 4WD Hardware (Columbiana, OH store) for parts occasionally. I also use Summit, and a local 4WD store, Meridian Offroad. I've had no problems with any of them. If I do, I'll stop using them.

I quit using 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers 20 years back. They actually have A CS person??????? Could have fooled me.

I have been buying stuff from Summit since the early 70's and have never had a problem that wasn't quickly resolved and very few of those 100's of orders even had a problem.

I feel very fortunate that I have two very good local establishments that will get me any needed 4x4 or "speed" parts at very competitive prices. I utilize them as much as I can. They usually better pricing than any of the mail order places and if I do have a problem, you can't beat the CS.
