So, just picked up some 80W-90 to swap out the Transmission gear oil.

I tend to use a heavier weight oil on older cars (~30 years). I use 20W-50 in my motor and it's worked out really well!

However, I saw some 85W-140 today and was wondering if maybe the thicker oil in my Transmission might work out equally well.

Does anyone have any opinions on using 85/140?

If you have the T-5 Transmission then you need to run ATF. That is whats called for in the manual for that tranny. Going thicker could creats some sifting issues for you in the winter and you will lose rear wheel power due to the energy it will take for the motor to turn those gears in that heavier oil.

Is it ATF... anything? I know there are 400 different kinds of ATF... anything I should be looking for?

Thanks!

i was told mercon3 in my T-5 ...did it and had all types of shifting problems. drained it..looked horrible...so searched around and found it was changed(actually a recall) the jeep number crossed to a manual Transmission fluid which i got right from my parts department(work for jeep) part#4874464 we use it in the mv3550 Transmission ..mine shifts much better...also beleive amsoil make a synchromesh fluid that is compatable to the mopar...search out the recall..good read!

So, because I had already drained the fluid (which is how I knew 80W-90 was wrong), I went with "ATF for High Mileage Vehicles." I think it's a Castrol product. Anyway, I'll let everyone know how it goes. I already took it for a spin around the block and everything seemed nice, quiet and easy... moreso than before the fluid change.

I saw the synchromesh fluid at the Autozone... it was about $10/qt. I think for the time being, ATF HMV will have to work cause I'm flat broke and $30 in fluid just isn't an option.

Thank you all for the advice!
