Slowly but surely I am working my way through the drive-train of my CJ7 , now that I have fixed the electrical issues, redone the brakes, and put in the superior one piece I am moved on to the Dana 30 in the front.

Everything checks out in good shape with the exception of the locking hubs, they simply will not disengage so I am figuring I need to disassemble them and check them out internally.

Being that I have never done this before, does anyone have any directions or even an exploded parts diagram of the assembly?

Also, the hubs do not look like the 6-bolt "Premium" hubs in that they have a nylon/plastic switch on them. Does anyone know if I should use the same service kit as the "Premium" (#7300)?

Thank you for the help,

Tony

The switch/knob in your photo is plastic. It looks just like my CJ. About 5 years ago, the PO had the same issue. What we did them was take it all apart carefully and grease everything well. They have worked fine since then.

There really isn't much to them other than some gears and a spring. Take those bolts out and see what you have. I bet the grease worms have just ran out of food!

When I took the driver side all apart a few months ago for some other issues, the grease we put in there 5 years ago was still there. I just added to it (the grease) and put it all back together. Worked well.

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

Pop it off and clean and grease as TWBTES said. Only special tool would be a snap ring pliers.

Worse case if a ring or spring is broken, order the parts and put the hub body back to drive it. No front axle, unless you're locked, but beats walking. :D

Thank you guys, I didn't figure that there was a whole lot to it because of the lack of information on it, usually the more difficult a part is the more detailed information you can find on it. The only caution I can find on servicing the hub is to not "over grease it."

Time to go see how it goes.

Thank you,

Tony

Well, I've pulled the driverside and wiped the parts down, regreased, and reinstalled to no avail...

Looking at the parts I think that there should be either another spring or a washer (to take up space) inside of the plastic cup (don't know the proper part names) in the middle so that the lock ring inside of it will engage the treads on the knob/switch.

Here is a pic of what I have in there...

Thank you,

Tony
