How is everybody doing? I have some dumb questions as well. My 68 CJ has had the 350 upgrade by po and it has the ross box for steering. I want to convert it to power steering and it has the dana 27 front axle. I found a guy parting out a 78 CJ and will sell gear box, pump, tie rods, column and wiring harness for $250. Is that a good deal and will it work with my axle? I am new at this obviously so be gentle.:chug:

You know, sometimes posts get missed. Sorry about that.

i wish i could help, let me get in contact with some of my buds. and i might be able to help. i do know that on my 75 i have a 44 front and rear with power steer, i do not belive that they had power steering on any of the dana prior to the 44. i have seen the 27 with power steering i belive it was out of a 72 CJ5 that had a 30, so it should be able to be done. next time post ur thread under a few things so more people will see it. i just ahppened to see it by accident. not that any one wont answer u. get pissy and they really wont. i have recived a lot of help off of here but i post it under a lot of thing so more people see the thred/post

Re: 68 CJ5 gear ratio and axle swap.

I do apologize for my pissy comments a while back. I have some other issues i would love an opinion on. My 68 has a 350 in it and at 55mph i am taching around 3000 to 3100. I have not opened my diff yet to check the ratio, but i know i have to change it. I was thinking about trying to find some explorer axles with 4:11's instead of trying to put new gears in existing axles. I have a D27 front and Dana 44 rear. I also have two more that came with the jeep D25 and a Dana 44 that have 5:25 gears in it. Ring gear 42 and pinion gear 8 i think that is right. I am considering selling them. Should i swap or change gears in what i got? Once again i am sorry for the comments from before, and it will not happen again. Thanks.

Re: 68 CJ5 gear ratio and axle swap.

Before I did any thing, I would jack the rear end up off of the ground and check the gear ratio. That way you have a starting point.

To check the gear ratio, rotate a tire / wheel and count the number of rotations of the drive shaft. If the rear wheels rotate in opposite directions make two rotations with the wheel, if they rotate in the same direction only make one rotation of the wheel.

Example: You rotate the wheel and they turn in opposite directions and you make two rotation with the drive shaft turning approximately three and three quarter time you would most likely have 3.73 gears.

What size tires do you have?

Re: 68 CJ5 gear ratio and axle swap.

I I was thinking about trying to find some explorer axles with 4:11's instead of trying to put new gears in existing axles. . Thanks.

Explorer axles?Explorers dont have solid front axles and the driveshaft is on the wrong side to the front to use with your Transfer Case .Explorers also use a different bolt pattern spacing on the wheels,[5on 4.5 vs 5 on 5.5].

What gears do you have now?Do you still have a dana 18 Transfer Case ?If so you need to retain the offset rear. Most v6 powered jeeps that year had 3.73 gears.Axles out of a late '70-'71 v6 CJ5 would get you 3.73s and one piece axle shafts in the back while still retaining the offset for the dana 18.

some times we just don't know.
Are we charging money for answers now? :D
I am a bit confused about what you are trying to do. raise or lower the RPM @ 55 MPH.

Well apparently you guys dont like answering questions either so screw ya, but i will find somebody who does. I am glad i didnt pay any money.

Here's a link for gear ratio charts.

Jeep Horizons :: RPM vs Gear Ratio Chart

That may help you to see where on the chart you want to be with tire sizing and RPM range.

I hate to beat a dead horse, If you are new to forums, sometimes if your post is unanswered after a day or two, go into it and reply "bump" to get your post back to the top... More people will see if, and may be quicker if you name the thread "Power steering upgrade?" or "bulk steering upgrade purchase?" etc, you'll get a lot more people who are good with those types of issues / questions.

Also your original question was a little difficult to answer... The "is this a good deal" type questions I've found to be easiest to answer by looking up the components individually priced online, and researching over all cost of shipping etc. myself...

All that being said, It was not my intention to belittle or chastise you, only to offer up some help for forums in case you are, as I was not so long ago, new to the forums world  If you already knew all that please disregard my attempt to assist :chug:
Cheers Man,
