I have a 71 CJ5 that doesn't run well yet - bringing it back from the dead. It came to me with a V6 and a Holley 390CFM, 4 BBL, Vacuum Secondary and electric choke. I'm about to buy a new carb as the rebuild attempt on the old one didn't go well. It won't idle at all unless really warm. Is this carb a good model for the engine? The engine is stock as far as I know, though it does have headers (no crossover pipe).
Any experience, thoughts, and recommendations would be appreciated.

The carb really never goes bad unless the seals on the throttle plate to throttle shaft get badly worn. And then, you usually only have a fuel seepage.

Just sounds to me like the carb wasn't cleaned and rebuilt correctly. There are really no parts that can wear out except those that are included on a good kit.

Who rebuilt the carb?

I rebuilt it myself. The jeep sat for about 20 years and the carb was pretty nasty. I'm not sure I got the power valve stuff right, and of course I don't know if it ever ran right before or what has been done to it. Thought it might be best to just replace it and start over, assuming this is a good carb for the application. I guess I could try cleaning it again.

I know this is late, BUT IF you see this...call Holley and order the following part:#12R7800 - 3AM

This is the number for the 390 CFM throttle baseplate. You won't get a better deal, and can't rebush the old one for less...and Holley DOES NOT LIST THIS PART on their site btw.

No, I don't know why...but I think it's because all of these are immediately put into the 8007 carbs they produce.
