Does anybody know where I can get a skid plate to fit my '72 under the rear gas tank or do I have to make one?

They are very hard to find as the only ones that fit will be from 72 - 75. You might try Collins Bros or JW.

I saw one yesterday on Craig's list in Texas. I will find the link and pm it to you.

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

Hard to find but they can be had on Craig’s List and ebay too from time to time as a lot of CJs have been parted out over the last few years by unemployed/under employed people trying to make a buck. Don’t forget the neoprene “pad” that sits between the bottom of the tank and the top of the skid plate. It wasn’t included on the 1972 models but became standard by 1973. The problem is that without the pad rocks will pack in between the skid plate and the tank causing the tank to crack letting your gas leak out. This is from the “been there done that file”. It used to be SOP for me to keep a bar of hand/bath soap in the glove box of my 72 CJ5 to hit a new leak with a good rubbing with the bar when they developed. It will buy you a few days of driving in which to get to the repair if the tank is metal.

LOL - I hated when my 72 got a piece of gravel wedged between the tank and the skid! That was until I added some fome in the gap. Glad to see I wasn't the only ony who suffered this problem... ;)

BTW - If you cannot find one I can reverse engineer mine for you, you can see a factory skid plate I had powder coated in this pic. It is in the back center.

The tank was a real pain. When needed I use to pull the tank and fill it with water then try to melt a little coat hanger wire into the crack. The water made it impossible to properly heat up the tank metal to really “weld” anything together but on the other hand the water kept the gas fumes from blowing the tank up in my face too; back then I wasn't even a shade tree mechanic rather more like a dead bush mechanic (ha ha) and any way to get the fix done was acceptable.
