Question is, did the 73 cj come out stock with an/or without a tailgate ?

- Right now, only one '76 CJ5. 304 with a three speed stick. Everything else is pretty much stock 'cept for a 4" suspension lift. Came to me with a back breakin' 4" suspension lift attached to a reverse shackle setup (Reversed the reverse shackle :dung: and now she rides like a Caddy!) Also posess a few 60s & 70s Mustangs and a couple of late 70's F150s 4X4s.
Going by memory here so dates may not be spot on; AMC started offering option changes that affected the tailgate somewhere in the neighborhood of '71 to '72 for the CJ5 . The non-tailgate option was available until the end of the CJ5 run in '83.
So actually, the answer to your question is YES to all. Your CJ might be in the option available year that made it possible to have it with or without a tailgate.
I'm sure someone on here has, and will provide, more concrete statistical data but, I believe I'm in the ballpark.

I imagine that's possible. You'll need to plunder around in your Jeep to see what other Renegade clues you can find.
From what I understand, the non-tailgate option wasn't dependent on upgrade packages like Renegade and Golden Eagle . It was possible to get a basic CJ5 without a tailgate if desired.

Originally came with a AMC 304 under the hood. Slotted mag wheels. Renegade stripe came down the side of the hood, then dropped down to the Jeep emblem on the side. The windshield frame should originally show as painted black. The Jeep name on the sides should be higher up than the later models. I think the Jeep name started at the bottom behind the front fenders somewhere around mid to late '74.
Keep in mind, the slotted mag wheels may not have made it to all Renegades in '73. AMC had an order shortage, didn't order enough to cover the demand, or something like that. Anyway, ain't no guarantee every Renegade got the mag wheels.
