Question, I have a 1974 CJ5 and the AMC 304 just went kaput ,needs a rebuild.. Would really like something w/ better gas mileage, and a somewhat painless swap would be nice too. what would be the easiest swap for me ,besides a AMC 304 or 360. I am a welder so a mount or two wont be a problem. does anything bolt right up to the original 3 speed tranny? I think its the T-15 . I6 would be nice.

did you say better gas mileage??

If that is the object of the exercise I don't think a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /AMC 232 i6 will make enough difference to make it worth the change and I would not recommend a 4 cylinder as an "upgrade". You may have some success with a fuel injected V6, GM maybe, but the "bolt up" thing may not be possible. I would go with a rebuild on the AMC 304 and Geo metro to drive to work.
