Continuing to investigate ways to get more comfortable in my CJ5 . I need to tie the roll bar to the frame, which with my tub will stop me from notching out the wheel well.

Does anyone have any experience installing a 28" tilt column instead of a 30? Something like this:

Except not that one, that's pricey...

I am not comfortable manually cutting down the existing column, and it's very loose and noisy as it is.

Thanks!

I’d go with a 28”. CJ5s are known for being “cozy” and that extra 2” really helps! Especially if you have a gut!
Check the length of the existing column, if there is enough room between the dash and where the column widens, go for it.
All of mine had the straight shaft with the Greyhound bus steering wheel. The bottom is pressing doen on your legs, the middle in your chest and the top rubbing on your chin!
Besides moving my seat back 3”, I shortened the column several inches as well as moved it up higher on the dash. It’s VERY comfortable now.
If you want detailed PICs, let me know... I’ll post some upside down. ;)

Great info, Jeff, I appreciate it! I went out and measured and I have three inches between the dash and the collar. I'm also realizing my wheel isn't do me any favors either, I can go smaller and flatter to get another inch there. That should do it.

I'd love to see pics of how you have it moved higher though, if you wouldn't mind?

Thanks!!

Having trouble uploading.... best I can do is tiny pics... the collar on mine should be even with the bottom of the dash.
Do these help?
