i just bought a 77 CJ5 and need to install the missing smog parts for california.
it looks like it still has the pcv i think it is missing parts of the egr the vapor control system looks like it is all there. i think i am only missing the air guard system and the cats. are there any other parts and does anybody have pictures of them, i have seen the pictures in the 77 manual.

anybody???

looked again and it looks like the egr system is missing.

I know its California, but don't all states eventually have a cut off point for inspections? I've lived in Washington and North Carolina, and if your car was older then 25 years, you were exempt.

Maybe it's worth double checking with the DMV?

The smog law in California used to be 25 years but about 10 years ago or less they decided that the new year was 1975. Anything 1975 and older is smog exempt.

AAGGGHHH!!!! 40 Years?? That's rough. Best of luck finding those parts you need. Really hope it works out!

that would be great if somebody wanted to sell the parts. if i new what all i needed i would start looking in scrap yards.

There is an auto wrecker around here that has a pretty good rep for old Jeep parts. Try J & W Auto Wrecking, Antelope Valley, Ca.

Wouldn't an inspection give you a list of components that you need to bring the vehicle into compliance?

Not always! I had to get a safety inspection in NC, and there was absolutely no info from the DMV explaining what you need working to pass. Bastards!

i was going to bring it in after i got some of the parts installed

i was reading more on this and read something about fuel injection helping with smog requirements is that true, and if so how does it help.

thanks

To have a smog legal f.i. on a CJ in the birthplace of auto emissions systems it has to have a California Air Resources Board number or be approved by a DMV referee. There are only two approved kits on the market, The Howell t.b.i. kit and the Mopar m.p.f.i. kit. I have heard of guys installing complete f.i. Chevy engines with positive results from a referee. I have the Howell kit and have always passed smog since the installation.

ok so all the efi would replace as far as smog stuff would be the carb and air cleaner? also how would i identify the exhaust manifold to make sure it is the original with the ports for the air injection. thanks

It is a little bit more than that, f.i. systems do not need the air injection. They do require a egr valve, pcv valve, and oem charcoal cannister. You might want to investigate these systems requirements on the web.

I'm not a fan of litigation, but in this case, I'd make an exception.

The Online Jeep Service, Repair and Maintenance Manuals (1975) service manual has an entire chapter dedicated to emissions. I think my 1980 service manual does as well.

I can't find a copy of the '77 on line, but that might have the answers you're seeking and the publication is easy to find for sale.

I realize that my 77 CJ5 is not a californicated Jeep but for the record, it had no catalytic converter, ever.:D

I'd go to the scrap yard and find me a 74-75 VIN tag instead... But that's just me...

In Texas you just have to throw a given amount of money at the problem every year. Show up with so much in receipts and you get a pass until next year. they think you are at least trying to fix things. And of course over 25 years I think, gets a pass on emissions. Although technically the parts, working or not, of the smog system are supposed to be in place to pass.

On the subject of the Howell/mopar system, I think you need an O2 sensor as well and the Mopar, I think, needs a crank position sensor.:D

that would open up a new can of worms then i would need the pink slip for that vin tag.

dang it!!! now i want to move to texas!! or maybe just about anywhere but comifornia

ok got a quote from j&w and also from the local parts store and the local parts store can get the egr cto and the egr but need to know the number stamped into the egr valve they said it should be 17050471, 7040176, 17050472 or 7030881 anybody know which is right??

almost forgot i was told that a wide band o2 sensor would help with adjusting the carb so there is the least amount of emissions, i am looking at one that is removeable because i dont want to install a new gauge. anybody used one an if so what would you recommend.
