Hey guys! so I'm completely new to this forum and i just bought my first JEEP CJ5 . I've always wanted one and now i have my very own problem child (haha). It has a stock steering column and i just swapped out the seats to a more original style low back Best top trail max II. I thought this would give me more room to get into the damn thing .... wrong! I know i could lose 20-30 lbs, but give me a break, i need a show horn to get me past the steering column. Ive been told a swap out to a tilt column would help. and since JEEP stands for ( Just Everyone Else's Parts ) i could use some similar year chevy tilt columns. I'm looking for what would be the easiest direction to go and not have to modify a ton of stuff. Also trying not to break the bank. Any help would be great - THANKS!

Mike

Looking online should be able to help you with the swap as it is quite common. I have those well padded Bestop Trailmax II seats in mine and had to install the Bestop seat brackets as they were 1" shorter than oem. This was also helped by removing the seat adjuster also and drilling a permenent location for the seat adjustment. I already had a 13 1/2" padded steering wheel which was another help.
This might give you some ideas:

A Cherokee column will work. You would want a older one before the air bag.

i may consider getting those Bestop seat brackets to help. Since i have 33's on it with no power steering i won't be switching out to a 13 1/2 steering wheel. There seems to be a lot of options for tilt columns, I'm just trying to find something that requires the least amount of modification. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the direction, do you have any idea how much modification has to be done going with a cherokee column? I assume looking for something around the same years as my CJ5 and pre air bag would probably work?

So another question ..... anyone know if a 1977-1981 Camaro tilt wheel will bolt right up to my CJ5 ???? or will the modifications be substantial?

Just curious since I also own a '77...why don't you have power steering? I thought it was stock but as usual, I'm probably wrong.

Sorry. I can't help with the steering column as I kept my stock one.

I had a 83 CJ5 that didn't have power steering.
