So is there anyone out there who can tell me what this fuel tank is? It came off of my 78 CJ7 QuadraTrac AMC 304 . I don't know if it's a factory extra or an aftermarket making them. There were no straps on it. It just bolts in. Just had tank boiled, can't find a sending unit or someone to make one for me. Any advice would be appreciated.

You have a custom built steal tank. Best think to do is make sure you can clean it out. The water in the gas will rust the bear steal. That's why gas tanks are dipped. If you can invest in a new tank. A 15 OEM is about $85 plus the sensor. You can also get a poly tank and get those in 20 gals. You will also need a new skid plate for it, straps to hold it in too. Yes it's a lot, but getting back to OEM will most likely be better in the long run in my opinion. Custom stuff is great for the customizer, but the next user suffers.

Can u give me advice as to 20 gal propaline tank verses stock 15 gal (aside from + 5gal.) do they make skid plate for 20gal. Also I'm completely new to this. Any advice for who to deal with jeep stuff. Ie o,wed windshield frame6 and assorted other body stuff. Thanks .

I switched from a 15 to the oem plastic 20 last year when I swapped my frame. Best thing I have done to it besides the new frame. I got it from a friend who sells parts. Got the oem skid plate. Search craigslist and be patient. I was lucky. I have no idea who makes them aftermarket. Good luck. I am very happy with the upgrade. Less times at the gas station makes me happy.

My understanding is that it was available for the CJ7 so you should be able to find original stuff.

That tank reminds me of an after market 22 gallon tank I bought many years back when I used my jeep as a DD and got tired of filling me 15 gal tank 2 times a week. When I stopped driving my jeep every day I went back to the 15 gal tank because the long range tank hung to low and would bottom out to much 4 wheeling

There were several aftermarket tank makers back in the day.
Aero and Trailblazer are just a couple I recall.
A little searching and you should be able to come up with a sending unit that would work.
They didn't make their own senders, someone was making them for them or they were using a style readily available.

Fuel Tanks: Difference is size, the 20 gal hangs down more to increase the amount of gas, and yes they make skid plates for them. For OEM here is a good price: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=78+jeep+cj7+fuel+tank&tbm=shop

Body Parts: 1976 - 1986 Jeep CJ7 and https://www.4wd.com/hardparts/HP_PartList.aspx?hpDID=126

Windshield frame: Best is a used one, other wise - https://www.4wd.com/hardparts/HP_PartList.aspx?hpDID=126

Keep in mind that almost all stamped parts for a jeep body come from the same place. Juan's Some of the smaller parts are stamped else where.

Wondering ...... What's wrong with the tank you've got? How much fuel will it hold? A sending unit would very likely go in the existing fuel outlet. You might need to modify it a little. If it were me I'd find one of the high quality universal sending units and get an aftermarket gauge that works better than the stock item and install that in the tank you've got.

If the tank actually is bare metal there are many places that will line the tank or you can get a fuel tank liner and do it yourself. I did a Harley Davidson tank and it was easy enough for most anybody to do themselves.

Since the tank is nice and angular making your own skid plate would be very doable. If you are worried about straps, they would be easy enough to make as well.

My biggest concern was the rust in the tank. That's why I prepped my answer with that question. As for lining it, I've not heard of any great results with doing that yourself. Plating it would be the best option. OEM tanks are sealed using an electrical charge to make the sealer bind to the metal better. From what I've read, after a couple of years you have problems again. But then everybodys mileage on this may be different. Could be a good way to go.
