Ok, so I bought a refurbished tilt column for my 79 CJ7 build.

Everything is exaclty the same - length, spline to shaft, mounting, etc.

Except - the ignition switch plug that sits on top of column appears to be about 1/2" closer to the firewall and it hits my brake pedal lever.

Anyone have any experience with this and a simple fix?

Thanks guys.

Well, the way we see it, we have a couple of options.

1. Grind and possibly have to weld the brake pedal lever.

2. Re-locate the ignition switch toward dash about 1/2". Puts it really close to the back of the dash mounting bracket.

3. Lower the rear of the column at firewall down. But that doesn't really get it completely clear of the pedal lever. Still has possibility of rubbing.

Also, I'm putting this in a new glass tub. So there are no mounting holes yet in the firewall for the mounting flanges - other than the big clearance slot for column to protrude through.

Have you thought about removing the key and installing a key or push button on the dash? That seems like it would remove all the headache and add a nice touch to the glass tub

Gunner that's a good idea. I had thought of that. Only thing is that would not allow for the column un-locking mechanism. would still have to have the keyed column switch.

We have several old columns to compare. Probably moving the switch plug towards the dash is best.?

It is a bit later model than a 79. I had to drop the column at the fire wall in my 77 It was not a big deal you just need to re drill the holes in the fire wall mount so it rides a little lower.

Took the switch apart last night. Looks to be simple enough. Can make a nice little adapter plate, move swith towards dash 1 1/2" then cut/bend the connector rod. No problem.

Until the next problem.

Man that sounds like such a pain to have such a small part cause so much trouble. Sounds like you have lots of patience

No big deal I hope. Gunner I'll post up some pics of this situation later. Just keep in mind if you get a new tilt column that there's a little retrofit. Luckily, the length and splines are all good. I also go lucky in that the guy I bought it from sent me a free newer style wheel.

Fixed. Simple adapter plate moved swith towards dash 1.4". Just had to cut and re-bend the acutator rod. No problem.
