i'm digging.
Last week my wife bought me the CJ5 for restoration and play that I have been talking about since the first week we met. It being my first foray into the mechanical world I am sure that I will be drawing on y'alls skills and knowledge a lot as I proceed.

Currently I am still compiling a list of things I would "like" to do with it but immediate issues include u-joints clutch assembly which both work but seem a bit rough, and an e-brake that is non functional.

cosmetically the bed liner (inside and out) will have to be stripped because it was done poorly the first time and some minor rust repair in the tub.

This build will include a lot of bonding time with two of my boys (ages 3 and 5 who are already excited) and will influence the order of some of the projects so they can see the progression instead of all under the hood work immediately.

As I get some time away from the station I will tear into it a bit and post current components and stats.

Looking forward to talking it out with y'all

You will find that this is one of the best forums you have ever been on. There are some fantastic people on here. On another note post pictures. Post many pictures, we like pictures.

Fine lookin' "pit crew" you have there! Keep us posted.

I got caught up with family things and have not had much time to work on 'ol girl.

But I did replace both the fuel pump and fuel filter last week which seems to have solved almost all my mechanical issues. (Still need to pull my clutch assembly and replace it)

And today I began a fun project my son has been eager to get to. The terrible "bed liner" paint job currently adorning the CJ is being replaced with a temporary "Flat Military green" until we decide (and save up for) what we want to do permanently.

It took about 5 hours to sand down the hood.

And another 2 to clean it thoroughly. (Braden paid an extreme amount of attention to detail. You wouldn't believe this kid is 5 watching him work on this jeep.)

After 3 coats... (The last coat was as thick as I thought I could make it without running. The primer and paint in one doesn't seem to want to fill any voids or miner pits left after the Bedliner removal)

The finish is great (smooth and pretty close to the color Braden wanted) but it's gonna have to be stripped and reworked with a proper primer prep. I should have gone with my gut on the 2 in 1 and done it properly the first time.

(I cant seem to add photos from my phone so I will add them from pc tomorrow. Sorry. I know this post is basically useless without them but I can't bare not to post seeing as I just typed this all up. Lmao

Welcome from California.
As you can see, I just joined this site and it is indeed a very useful and informative site. Looks like a fun project and to have the boys in there with you is great! Show them the way...

Purchased my 1980 CJ5 for the same reason you did. Wanted to have my 7, 5 and 1 yr old boys to get into Jeepin' and have some fun myself in the process. Amazing how young boys are naturally drawn to a Jeep CJ! Welcome to the site and have fun on your project!

Very nice start. Have fun !
