I bought a new to me 81 CJ5 inline 6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . It's a manual 4 speed with Reverse in the top right position. It has a single stick 4 wheel transfer. I found an old shift knob that goes
4L
N
2H
4H

However I drove it home with the stick all the way forward and was able to hit around 55 according to the person that was following me home (speedometer doesn't work yet) It's my first CJ and my family's second after my dad's older CJ7 . Hope you can all help with the information provided.

Could be a SR4 tranny.
If your t'case was in low(you said shift lever was fully forward). You would have NEVER seen highway speed.
If your driveline is OEM you will have a Dana 300 Transfer Case .
Post up pictures of the tranny and t.case.
Welcome to the sickness:chug:
What desert are you in?

Thanks and I'm fully looking forward to sickness! I will post pics as soon as I get home of both of them as well as the engine to see if i have the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l or AMC 232 i6 . The previous owner was pretty much clueless about the jeep as he hardly got to drive it and never bothered to ask the owner before him either. I'm not looking to make it pretty just something I can have fun with up in the mountains with. I'm in the great 505 desert.

New Mexico desert. And thanks for the manual recommendation. I'll take a look at getting it as soon as possible for sure. You've already been a great help. You can see the project as my profile picture.

NM-I just never heard of the 505 reference-:poke:
That FSM should be you next 'buy'.
Also-Start a log of everything you, fix-replace-buy with PN's for future reference as CRS set's in. :D
Look'n forward to see'n the pictures.

Your engine would have been screening with parts tossing off it running at 55 MPH in low range. Post up some pics of what you have.

Especially, when our AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 's are redlined at 4500rpm :D

No worries it's just our area code for the majority of the state. And thank y ou for the recommendation on the parts list!

Area code-Who would have thunk it?

That's what we kind of figured but at the same time not having any frame of reference after finding that old shifter knob we were a little concerned. It ran beautifully and definitely didn't sound like anything was wrong with the engine.

Dude where you been ? Out in the desert under that hot sun ? :) All the youngins go by the area code now. I'm in the 504. A lot of cars these days have stickers in the back with their area code. We are just old dinosaurs LG :)

Well then, I would be 661.
I will now return to my cave........

In Arizona, since our area code is bigger than most of New England it wouldn't mean much in the way of local area pride.

Pictures working!

I know this might be a radical idea. Maybe I missed it somewhere. Why not grab onto that stick and row it around and see what happens? If it moves you will fairly quickly know where high, low and neutral is.

Doesn't look stock to me. It would be good to straighten out the motor mounts. A screw is missing. Also one out of three mounts on the motor have a washer. Then thee is the fact that the stops on the steering shaft have been compromised, no real harm there, but why? is my question.
