Build Thread 83 CJ-7 Tear Down and Rebuild
Rippin
Jeeper
The Patient: 83 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , T-5 and twin stick Dana 300 , stock Dana 30 and 1 piece axled AMC20
The Procedure: New(ish) frame, YJ tub, total tear down of every single removable part, clean it all, paint what can be, rebuild almost every moving part,
I like the drivetrain that's currently under it, so I'm gonna leave that alone, apart from a motor rebuild and 4.0 head. Current frame is rotted out pretty badly, so its definitely gotta go. Bought a used frame a couple months back with almost no rust, which I was really excited about because it cemented that I am actually gonna do this, and it's not just a "gonna do this one day" project. The only rust I could find on it is on the inside drivers side frame rail a the back. tub could be repaired with a new floor and a couple small body patches, but i would much rather have a galvanized YJ tub and not have to deal with fixing the current one.
This is gonna be a pretty slow build, as my wife is due with our first kid in December. I don't expect it to take any less than a year and a half from now. This is the first time I've ever ventured into something this large, so veterans please feel free to "set me straight" if I veer too far off the beaten path lol.
The first pic is how she sits now, those are 33's. Second is the new frame.
