Thanks for all the help and advice so far in my search for my CJ7 project. Question 1; I saw a really good looking deal on an 84 CJ7 that meets most all of my needs except one major obstacle. It has the 4 cylinder and I am wanting a AMC 304 . Is it as easy to put the v8 in a Jeep built for the 4 Cyl as it is to swap the inline 6 with a AMC 304 ? And is the drivetrain different? It does have one piece axles and a rear locker. Question 2; how big of a deal is adding a/c to a non factory a/c Jeep?

Thanks

So what I know is all the AMC motors had the same bell housing bolt pattern so other than motor mounts a AMC 304 should bolt up. A AMC 304 was not offered in '84 and the '84 is a computer controlled motor. If you have to pass a smog test where you live you will fail with a AMC 304 under the hood. Then what are your plans with it? It will have a T-5 Transmission that is pretty weak and will not hold up to a AMC 304 unless it is just a street Jeep and you don't beat on it. If you plan to wheel it you will need to up grade to at least a T-176 Transmission . I hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. They eliminated vehicle inspections SC about 20 years ago. When they did have them all you had to do was know someone at neighborhood gas station/shop. I had a Nova 2 back in the 80's that should have never come close to passing with all I had done. The computer thought never crossed my mind, I'll have to go back and read the great info page again and learn the changes and availability per year. I figured the 4 poker would have a different Transmission but was hoping otherwise. I'll keep searching. Thanks
