Vehicle(s)
86 CJ7 Laredo Black
The Jeep was totally gone thru, 124k original miles on body,
New Crate engine and Trans, Weber Carb, Interior replaced back to stock, Dana 44 Rear, Dana 35 Front, 2.5 " Suspension Lift 1" body 33-12.50 Tires on Mickey Thompson Wheels, New Dupont Paint
My CJ7 handles fine at interstate speeds and even under hard brake at 55-60 ish but if you hit 70-75 and have to get on the brakes the rear end gets real loose, I was told by a friend it was the type of kit I had and it would fix it,
but Im wondering if a 4 wheel alignment would fix it or something less than a different lift kit,
I bought it with a 4 in kit and rancho steering stabilizer on it
with 33,12.50-15's

I eventually plan on ditching the 33-12.50-15's for some 33-10.50's i think i found some in 16 or 17 in i cant rem,
But I my 15's are new bfg's on MT2 wheels so I figure i can sell easily,
but
Help with original ? would be great,
Im going to go crawl under the jeep and see if I can find out what all components are on it,
the guy i bought it from used it as a trailer queen, if he wanted to go jeeping it was at gatlinberg or the beach and he trailered it there,
But i had drive it from his place to mine on interstate and it didnt do what it is now, i got in a fender bender on front passenger side and now it does,
the lift kit on it may not be the best but it not doing it before keeps bothering me.

so the issue is only under brakes ???

rear drums are notorious for being slightly out of adjustment and when on them very hard will pull one direction more than the other

You are driving a short wheel base with little weight over the back wheels and a higher center of gravity you can not expect it to stop like a sports car

keep your brakes adjusted best you can and drive with extra care to anticipate braking so you don't have to jump on them hard

I'd check the side that got hit for a bent spring or a broken spring pin, or

Its way worse under braking, its just i hear others saying theirs is cool at interstate speed and the last few times ive driven it its been ok under 70, at 70 starts feeling kinda like a go cart and the rear end is real loose feeling,

but i was washing it today and i put my hand on top of the tire and it seemed to have some play. like i put my hand on top of the inside of the tire and there was a litttle play when i pulled it out towards me.

i measured my tire and even though they say 33-12.50 they only measure 31 in tall and 11 wide and they are not worn out 75-80% new or more
anyways,
I think the guy just did a shackle and add a leaf lift, and im wondering if thats part of my problem,
one of my friends said like the other member mentioned checking out suspension parts on the side where i wrecked, but it just bent the front tube bumper a little and front fender some, nothing major, anyways,

I just want it to handle
I mean I had a suzuki samurai with a spring over and 33's that handled better than this does,
so I know something is wrong. I think the lift would help b/c it would replace all the suspension components.
I got under it today and its got a rancho stabilizer but the shocks were just black and it had a 5 pack i believe of springs and 3in shackles from bolt to bolt.

I just dont want to spend 1000 on something I really dont need b/c there are things I do want to do to it

The tire should not have any play. Maybe an axle bearing gone bad.
33" tires usually don't measure a true 33" so nothing unusual about that.
Stock lenght shackles are 3" bolt to bolt, so no lift there.

70-75mph in a CJ7 ? and get on the brakes hard? are you nut's? Seriously a lifted cj on 33" tires is not a highway machine and maybe your expecting too much.

Ok I should have posted more clearly
If I was at 55 slowing down to 50 ok
If I was over 65 and just hit the brakes not locked then up or anything is when the loose. Play was extreme in rear,
And I was driving home from body shop when I had fender painted
At 50-55 it wanted to wander all over road even when not braking

Thanks for the tip on the wheel vearing, I'm going to check all the wheel bearings and get the components on suspension checked out
By a a pro
I did my self but I am not a pro and get it alignment check
And I'm planning on putting a BSA lift on it to get new suspen components and plenty of room for 33 s
I'll keepu posted at wash step

I always respect your opinions but that is just not true. A properly suspended CJ can handle just fine at interstate speeds and safely stop. The "it drives like a Jeep" saying exists due to worn out parts and improperly lifted CJ's from people who did not know what they were doing and how to correct the geometry of the vehicle after they messed it up. CJ's amy not stop like a Toyota Camry or a similar vehicle but they can be safe.

75mph in ANY lifted CJ riding on off road tires is not safe in my book. He may and most likely does have worn parts/incorrect geometry from lift/etc. and can improve the situation and your right they can be made safe with enough attention.

What sort of diff is in your rear 44?

Lockers while slowing down at highway speeds can give similar results.

I agree. It can be improved. How deep is your wallet? Sending stuff to the "pro's" can get pricey, especially when they will tend to want to replace/upgrade everything.
